    Load Data for 178 A-max for .308 w/ IMR-4064 powder

I'm looking for load data for a Hornady 178gr a-max for my .308 with IMR4064 powder. Just need the starting load, and published max load with COL (i'm assuming 2.800", however you know what they say about assumptions). None of my books have that bullet, but they are older manuals too. Spent some time searching the internet but most of what I found either has ridiculously low velocities, or you have to pay to see the data. Did a search on here but I really don't have the time before work to filter through all the results. I appreciate the help. I've had these a-max's sitting here for several weeks and I haven't loaded any up. Been focusing on the Bergers too much. If I get these a-max's to shoot well on a 2.800" COL (so they'll fit in the magazine unlike the Bergers) then i'll be good to go!

I take it your using berger vlds or something ? As far COL i would just load . - .10 or .25 off the leade , or to magazine lenght ,Most books i see do list very small charges for 4064 as well.

    so ill just give you the powder charges. Sierra 5 th says imr4064 start 35.7 mv 2200 , 37.5 mv 2300, 39.3 2400, 41.0 2500, 42.8 2600 ( 2700lbs nrg)

    lee book 38.5 2300fps, 43.5 2550,

If you decide to use AA4064 i believe it takes up less case capacity if thats an issue for you.
To be honest i never liked the amax's. Never shot better then sierra or berger or lapua at least in my guns. [/code]
    What was that ?

I'd suggest finding some Varget. It works very well with the 178 AMAX. Mine are going out about 2700fps from a 20" barrel. You can use loads for the 175 SMK with the 178 AMAX. Just as with either bullet don't start with a max load

Load info for IMR and Hodgdon powders can be found on Hodgdon's site

Thank you for the reply. I'm testing the a-max's because i'm looking for a match grade hunting bullet. I really want just one load that I can use for everything from target, to long range, to hunting, hence the main reason i didn't go straight to Sierra MK's. The Bergers have done ok (mostly 5/8-3/4" with the occasion 3/8" thrown in when I do a better job behind the trigger), however i'm looking for that 1/2" 5x5 load. Nice thing is that the POI doesn't shift as the barrel heats up, however the groups open up a tad, which could also be attributed to fatigue from recoil (i'm a recoil sissy).

Hopefully i'll get out this coming weekend again to get some more range time. Been able to get out one day a week every week for the last 2 months. Lots of trigger time has helped a lot as well.
