Ballistics for .300 win mag vs .338 lapua?

I am some what puzzled. I am using a ballistic calculator on the HSM 190 grain match .300 win mag ammo and also on the HSM 250 match .338 lapua ammo. I am using the ballistic info off the hsm ammo webpage for each cartrigdge. They seem to be very close in the data. Any insight?

That should be a good lesson in how important bullet selection is for long range ballistics. Many think the 338 Lapua is a laser beam.... and it is compared to many other cartridges at very long range. But there are many ways to shoot very flat to 1000yds without such a cartridge. The 338 Lapua really starts to shine beyond 1000yds when using the high BC bullets available, even though the MV's are nothing special. I would guess that HSM is using the Match King when the Scenar would provide much better ballistic performance.

    250gr SMK: .587 BC
    250gr Scenar: .675 BC
    300gr SMK: .768 BC
    245gr Bore Tech V3: .869 BC

scenars are great for the 338, the 300gr is .785.

Hunting is about the only thing I'd use the 338 for inside of 1000y. It's much cheaper to shoot the winmag below 1300 or so.

I'm shooting 300 win mags out to the 1200 yard mark on a pretty regular basics.

I'm building the 338lm for the 1500-2000 yards i shoot. thats were the win mag suffers.

With in the 1000yard mark there almost neck and neck.

Yes but a 1000 horsepower under the hood doesn't cut it if the guy next to you has 550 and a rig that ways half as much. In other words I can shoot the 300 3 time as much and if it gets it done what the hey. I want one of the 338 super mags (have not made up my mind which one yet) probably the edge but this side of 1k it isn't a need just a want.

    Also look at the cost...

What some folks don't realize is that if a cartridge is 1500 meter capable, the question rather is, can YOU shoot that far and hit what you aim at?

I mean, my own physical limit is around 900 yards so for me it would make NO sense to even own a .338 LM. So I choose .308 with 300WM on my mind as well. I see no valid reason to have a rifle I can't use. That's like driving Ferrari in a 65 mph zone.
    Just my 2 cents.

If you shoot a 308 well at 900yds you should be able to shoot a 300 win mag well to 1100yds or so, and a 338 Lapua well to 1500yds or so... just a thought.
