    LAPUA 167 ??? in 308

has anyone tried the lapua 167gr. scenar and what did you thank ?
I started off using them with good success . I have been getting 1/2
moa groups @ 100 yards . but after reading the forums it would seem
that the majority of shooters prefer 155gr.&175gr. so am i wasting
my time working up my loads with the 167s? BTW 700 yards will
be my max range for this load.

While I've not used them, I doubt you'll have any problem reaching 700.

Depending on elevation and your barrel/load... the real troubles with most bullets come when they drop subsonic and stumble. Scenars aren't plagued with it nearly as much as say a 168SMK. My 150 nosler bt load gets me to 1050yds or so before they drop subsonic. Each bullet, in each rifle, with each load will behave slightly differently. One easy way to find a true map of when you'll be likely to drop transonic is to chrono your load at the muzzle, again at 100yds, and again at 300yds... and consult JBM to verify your numbers are matching your ballistic calc... and then run the distance out until you see them drop below the sonic barrier.

Its a pretty accurate way of determining your realistic performance envelope. Some bullets can cross the barrier more effectively than others.

In a nutshell, you'd have to pick a real turd of a bullet in the 308 to not remain supersonic to 700. I'd be working the accuracy angle via OCW or basic ladder testing at 500y. Whichever you are more comfortable with.

I have been shooting 167 Lapua loaded ammo for teaching/some comp for about a year. They shoot very well. Better thaan 168 Federal which is saying something.
This is the load I shoot when I shoot factory ammo now

Nice bullet and will stabilize in 1x12 twist. The factory stuff I have is loaded fairly hot and 1000 yards is not hard with this ammo.

For my top end comp, I hanbd load and find the 155s do better loaded hot than the 167s at a 1000 yards but out to 600-700 not much if any difference.
