My "go to" load for 308 is a 175 SMK, 43.5 grains of RL15, CCI BR2 primers in a Lapua case. It shoots out of my rifle at 2650 fps. Have had good luck with IMR4895 and H4064 as well. Varget is probably the most popular powder. They are a very popular bullet and many people have tailored loads to their rifle. If you look around there are several threads already started that discuss load data for the 308 and 175 SMK. You should always work you own load, just because a load is safe and accurate in one rifle doesn't mean it will be in the next. I would pick a powder and work up a load for your rifle. The Lapua brass is well worth the money btw.

    Good luck,
    Shane

    abadrs,

That is a great starting place. i have winchester and federal brass, and i trim to 2.008. im using varget, and seating to standard COAL. my practice load is a little light, at 40 grains. i get 2260fps out of a 26" barrel. my competition load is a little bit light too, 42.5 grains and i get 2605 - 2627fps out of same barrel. both loads shoot lights out for me. i am including a picture of the target i shot this past saturday. shot from the benchrest @ 100 yards.

The coin in the picture is a quarter. center to center the two outside shots measure 3/8". wish i hadnt thrown my 5th shot. thats the one on the farthest left.

Shane has this pegged. Work your load up to your specs. The above poster uses 42.5gr of Varget and gets upwards of 2,600fps, I get that with 43.5gr. of Varget in mine. Seating depths, case volumes, primers etc. all have a part in MV's.
I would say if your loading to SAAMI specs (2.800" or 2.810" oal's) then 42gr. of Varget with CCI BR-2 or Fed. 210M primers is a good place to start. Depends on how far you want to take the round too. 2,680fps is where I'm at for 1,000m shooting. I do shoot in a 500m tactical shoot once a month where I run my 175's at 2,520fps and at 500m my groups are under .5moa. I don't have to run them as hot for 500m and they're more accurate with less MV for me at that range.

These use federal brass trimmed to 2.008. COAL is 2.80, between 2.803 and 2.807. Primers are CCI 200 large rifle primers. Bullet is 175gr Sierra Matchking. Had very good luck with this load. This is out of my 26" barrel. Speeds are between 2605 and 2627fps.

    Gentlemen ,

I believe this is my first post and I'm not exactly sure how the process works from a smart phone. I have a range report using Varget from a 30-06 Springfield. I saw that there had been very limited resources so I worked up a load. Please forward this post to another area of the forum if applicable.1+ on Varget 43 gr. Fed 210m. SMK 175 gr. Sub MOA from Remmy 700 5R.20" Barrel. C.O.A.L 2.855! Since I am trying to use one powder I worked up a 06 load.

    Remington Case
    47gr. Varget
    Fed 210m primer
    Coal 3.310
    Remington 700 factory BDL
    22" barrel.
Hope this gets to someone who might need it.
Start load 45gr....Max 48 gr per Hodgdon with 175gr SMK
I have pics but its saying file size to big!

    My 0.02,

Never seek nor accept load data from the internet. ALWAYS go to your manuals and start with their recommended loads and work your way to your rifle's accuracy node.

Advice on powder type and primer type are fine, but NEVER replicate a specific powder charge you read on a forum unless you can find it to be reasonably close to manual loads and you start low and work your way up.

Re: reloading 175 siera match bullets

I've since changed my load a little bit. i use hornady's, sierra's, and CCI's books. all books list 39, 42, and 42 as the minimum charge for varget pushing a 170 something grain bullet. the max in all three is listed as 46 grains of varget in a .308 winchester. i started at 40.0 as stated above, and the muzzle velocity on a 20 shot string averaged 2350fps. the 42.5 grain load was 2650fps for the average of the 20 shot string.

did some more testing and found the best accuracy of all is the 43.5 node and im around 2765 average over a 20 shot string. i shot four 5-shot groups, and they are all around 1/3 MOA at 100 yards. i was blown away by how well this load performed. so, the above posters saying you will find a node at or around this charge are not BS'ing you.

as always start lower and work up, but you know that. even so, you are well under max listed charge at 43.5 grain varget charge in a .308 win.

This rifle shoots so well with this load I have stopped using the 175g SMKs and use the SSTs for everything in this rifle and leave the beyond 800 yard work to the 26 inch ...

Iíve posted my loads before and Iíve done my fair share of looking at other peopleís loads, but Knightstalkerís advice is the best youíre going to get. In the end you have to find out what works and is safe in your rifle.
