Powder selection for long range match grade ammo

Hi everyone, I was recently fortunate enough to get my hands on 5 full kegs of IMR 4895, and wanted to know if this is a good choice for loading match grade ammo for long range. I am currently shooting a Remington 700 Police .308 but will have my Tac Ops X-Ray 51 by next month. My typical day shooting is out to 1100 yards and the load is...

Sierra Match King 175 grain bullet set to 2.8 COL
    Lapua .308 brass
    Federal GM210M match grade primers
    43.5 grains of IMR 4064

It has performed very well for me in the past but I was able to get all of this powder for dirt cheap and was considering changing up for the time being. I basically wanted to ask you all if you have and experience with the IMR 4895 and was looking for the pros and cons of it VS the 4064. I know all it takes is to load up a few rounds and try it but I was basically asking your advice on what you think is a better choice for my shooting. I figure that if the 4895 is not ideal for what I am doing, then it will just turn into my basic semi auto reloading powder.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I would consider trading the 4895 off for some Varget and RL-15. Not that I have anything against IMR-4895 (I am sure that very accurate loads can be worked up with that powder) but Varget and RL-15 powder have worked extremely well for me and both are more stable in temperature changes than either 4895 or 4064.

More stable? I am still kind of new to the reloading thing (for accuracy any way), are you refering to it being more resistant to velocity changes when it heats up or cool down?

I have not used IMR 4895 but have used the Hodgdon H4895 and as far as I have seen, it is not temperature sensitive. I've shot it at about 40F and 95F and not seen any noticeable pressure difference.

Certain of Hodgdon's powders have been changed to become their Extreme line of rifle powders. They have recieved a special coating that makes them less affected by changing temp swings. As of yet, the IMR series has not recieved any special coatings.

Great info guys!! As i said before, I am not very familiar with stuff like this. I have been reading for years but have not tried shooting long range until the last 2 years or so. So there is a lot of things like this that I still need to learn.

Is it old military powder or newer?

If I remember correctly, 4895 was used quite a bit in matches before Varget came out. And I think was loaded in the 30-06 ball ammo for sniping.

I'll have to double check when I get hone though.

I believe it is the old military stuff because it is in old style keg and they have a basic white label on them. I basically purchased a ton of reloading components from an old ww2 military gun collector and most of what he had was old stuff from the 70's. But it was all new sealed containers.

The IMR powder isn't temperature stable.

    Nor is the Reloader series.

H4895 is fairly temperature stable. So is Varget. For a .308, Varget really is king in anything but long, long barrels.

Re: Powder selection for long range match grade ammo

Well I guess that settles it. My purchase did include 2 kegs of varget as well but regrettably i have already used alot of it in my .223 reloads. But i guess the bright side is that I have enough 4895 to last a very long time in my future semi auto reloads.

Thanks again for your help everyone!
