    208 grain a-max

I really hate doing this, because it's going to be the same thing , but I'm a newbie how close to 300 Wm terminal velocities can you get from a 30-06 without flying on the ragged edge????

    Re: 208 grain a-max

    I have data for 190 bthp's

looks like max on the '06 is about 2525 fps at the muzzle
max on the win-mag is about 2950 fps at the muzzle

I would thing the 208 amax would be a similar spread, but slightly slower. I don't have a current hornady manual, but you can check their manual to get maximum velocities for each. Then you can plug the numbers into a ballistics calculator like JBM to see how much energy they still have at range. 30-06 is a great round, but it will not keep up with the win-mag-- especially with heavier bullets. also, check the twist rate in your 06. you may not even be able to stabilize the 208.

Roughly. But yes, that is correct. Remember though.... 200 fps behind a 208 Amax is not pocket change. The guy who put that post up that I linked is a buddy of mine and we've shot over 2000 yds. together. I have a 300wm pushing 208's also. At 1000 yds. you'll be hard-pressed to see the difference, but once you get out past about 1250 there is a significant advantage to the WM.

But if you already have the 30-06, it can be made to do things people never dreamed of.

I know 200 FPS. Isn't nothing! I don't have a 30-06 yet, in fact what I have is a Parker Hale chambered in .270 on a Mauser action which by the Mauser central website & my measuring is an FN action or what is referred to as a Model V action ! I want to re-barrel it & re-chamber!
The 300 WM takes a magnum action?? Plus for reality if my paper punching & ?
So how stiff is the Model V Mauser action?
Is there a disadvantage to the 1-10 in using lighter bullets in the 30-06 or is that the usual twist rate, I'm considering a Stillen Match Barrel, I believe that's there name for it!

I rechambered my Tikka .270 for .260 Rem. Sweet round. Great ballistics. Light recoil. Very accurate to 1250. Excellent bullet selection and great on game out to distances as far as you should be hunting.

300WM has a different boltface from .270, but the 30-06 and 260 are the same.

I think I will probably take your advice jrob & go with the .260 remington the ballistics are excellent , I thought the long action would be underutilized , but chasing lands tends to make the rounds longer, or would it my mag. is 3.40!?
