    .308 Win Loads

I shoot a savage 10fp in .308 and was wondering if any of you shoot the a-max bullet? I am going to start to reload and was going to use the 178 a-max and was wondering if any of you had load data that might be useful. Or also what powders you might use. Thanks for all the help.

I would highly recommend you getting a manual or two.
Please don't trust just anyone's reloading data without first bouncing it off a manual first.

    I have shot 168gr. A-Max bullets.
I liked Sierra Match Kings better though.

Any data you use should be worked up from a lesser amount of powder.A manual is a really good idea if you don't have one. here are some sites to try that can get you started, but a manual is a must.

    www.hodgdon.com

    www.reloadersnest.com

    www.imrpowder.com

    www.accuratearms.com

These sites are powder manufacturer's sites except Reloaders Nest

All have good loads to try, but try with caution. Never use the fastest load first, use the starting load.Every rifle is different, and each has a different load it prefers. What works in my rifle may, or may not work well in yours.Varget, RL15 and IMR 4895 are the usual .308 powders, but many others can be used. Good luck with your loads.

    reloading books

I knew I should have said something about them. I have the Hogdon, Speer, and Alliant loading manuals. I didnt see any loads that they worked up for the 178 amax. I guess what im trying to get at is which powder is the best to use? Thanks in advance

When starting a load on a bullet not in a reloading manual, find a similarly shaped bullet that is referenced and start 15% below the max load recommended in the manual. Work up from there. (This starts you off a little lower than starting a workup on a known and referenced bullet and gives you some margin.)

Gun A may like powder V, while gun B from exactly the same manufacture and cailber may like powder H. That just part of the reloading game. Given a single bullet, a single lot of cases, a single lot of primers and a single rifle, you should be able to find a suitable load with just about any powder on the market these days (that is suitable for the desired velocity of the projectile.)
