    Barrel ?'s

I picked up a Remington 700 for my build in .308, now the fun starts! What barrel contours and twist rate do you all recommend. I am looking at Pac-Nor & Shaw barrels for this first project and thinking of a "Heavy" barrel profile. Thanks

personally I like the feel of .850-.900 muzzle diameter and length of 26" barrel OAL....I'm going with an 11 twist rate also....

I ordered a #4 contour for my 300wm as it is a "heavy" barrel but not a canon! However mine is for hunting as well as LR so weight is of some importance there. What other work will be done to the rifle? Barrels are only part of the equation.

A 24" with a Varmint contour will be adequate for almost any use. I like the M40/M24 contour. Good combo between weight and rigidity.

    Thanks for the replys guys!
    To answer few questions:
This wiil be a dedicated LR shooter (entry level), so weight shouldn't be a concern. And will most likely be starting off with factory match loads 174gr.

    I was considering this barrel:
    Pac-Nor 26" Heavy Varmit Straight Taper 1:12
Anybody have experience with their barrels? And what crown?
    Thanks again

.308 shooting that heavy/long of a bullet, you will probably want a 1:10, and might even want to consider a 1:9. 1:12 is a pretty slow twist rate for anything heavier than the 155 range.

    Just a thought.

Go with the 1:10 twist if your planning on shooting bullets heavier than 155 gr.

I have chosen a 20" Shilen select match barrel with the s7 or s8 contour.
1:10 twist. Will be ordering it in the next month or so.

In my opinion, the above suggestions are very, very conservative. In my experience a 12 twist barrel can stabilize a bullet up to 180 and some say 200, the 10 twist can do 220. The following chart is found on Lilja's web site and it's a pretty good rule of thumb:

Scroll down to the chart at the bottom of them page.
