its a M21 clone with a real U.S. ARMY contract ART II sniper scope. i built this rifle about 20 years ago.built with G.I. parts kit on a springfield armory receiver.SAK barrel and TRW parts mainly.
The M1A is a Sprinfield "standard" that I added a SADLAK NM spring guide and a USGI stock to. I wasn't too happy with the accuracy (4-6 MOA) at a 100yds on surp... I finally tried reloading for it and now it's shooting much better at ~2 MOA (through irons). My eyesight is starting to go - so I'm sure the gun will do a little better once I get a scope on it.
The Garand is a rather rare post-war Alpine that's rebarreled in .308 and the receiver is modified to take M1A mags. It came with the Smith brake, NM sights, and a recoil buffer. I've also picked up a Schuester adjustable gas nut for it, but have not had the opportunity to get it out to shoot yet. The Alpines were built on rewelds, but I got a great deal on it - so If I wind up getting a replacement receiver for it, it'll still have been a fair deal. The barrel length is 17.25 - so it's kind of like a "poor man's" SOCOM (to me).
Yeah, Beretta's responsible for the BM59. I think it was pretty much just an attempt at keeping the Garand around and getting around the whole 8 round en bloc clip thing.
Please note that Duff's link applies to the .30-06 "tanker" and my particular rifle is a .308 - which I think would be a far better choice in caliber for this particular rifle.
I haven't had it for too long and haven't taken it out to shoot yet. I wanted to acquire an adjustable gas-nut (before firing it) since these rifles are rare and built on re-welded receivers. It's in mint condition and I picked it up for only $520 - so I figure if I feel the need to rebuild it on an "un-cut" receiver, that it will still be well worth the price. I can tell that it's been fired succesfully from finish wear in the op-rod slot. This is important, since some re-welds have a reputation for "dismounting" the op-rod during firing. The "good news" is that the op-rod is quite tight and as difficult to remove as my M1A's op-rod.
The Beretta BM-59 is a similar rifle, but it uses a "proprietary" magazine, where my hi-cap M1A mags fit the Alpine. This is a real "bonus" for me - since I still live in CA and cannot legally acquire magazines for a BM-59. I already had a M1A and numerous 20-round mags, so this rifle was a "perfect fit" for my situation.
This rifle is going out with my Savage 10FP on my next trip - so I'll report back on it here as I'm looking forward to running it.
EDIT - I took a couple pix of the stampings..
I haven't been able to find much info on the .308 "tanker" conversions.
I guess I will have to post up pics of my M14 one of these days.
