With not much of an idea of what would happen or how bad I may screw up a nice hunting rifle I decided to camo my first rifle. Rifle is a Ruger MK II SS in 270 win. Paint is Rustoleum (SP?) primer, brown, dark earth, and tan. As you will see in the pics to follow it turned out better than I thought it would. The colors are a little off due to the lighting in my garage and the camera flash, but in real life they match the winter conditions of my hunting are very well. If anyone wants a break down on how to do it I will post what I did and what I would do over again. I will do the scope and rings later. I need to get some butler creek caps for the scope before I paint it and need a higher set of rings as well. Once I get the rifle complete I will post the completed project. As a starting point I used the advice of a friend of mine, LTRDavid, you can see more at his site http://www.LTRDavid.net

Let me know what you think.....good or bad!

QUESTION: should I put a coat of matte clear on top of it? Let me know.

EDIT: the 3rd pic is about the closest true color of the rifle

HERE ARE PICS IN MY AO. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

Looks good, littel tip, make sure to pack the inside of the BC caps with cotton balls to extra protect your glass, some paint can get inside.

Looks really good in the outside pics, especially the 2nd one.

That being said, I'm so used to seeing the 'typical' camo pattern that looking at the rifle inside I thought maybe you were taking up a shooting position behind my grandmother's old table with all the doilies on it. :D

I didn't really like it in the first photo, but once you showed it on the ground I'm really impressed with the way it blends in! The cammo pattern kinda reminds me of a rattlesnake skin. Good job!

Nice work!

Looked out of place in the home, but man...when outside!!! But that's the point. :)

Wow!!! I wasn't sure with the inside pics.. but once in the AO - really gives me something to think about. Defintily looking forward to reading how you did it. Just another thing I need to do when I get home again...

Yes, same here Swede. Didn't look like it would belnd well when the photos were taken inside, but outside, blends in very nice. The camo job is done very well. I would think Duracoat would withstand the elements and use much better, but hey, still a nice job on the paint!!

I agree to that.

After my wife saw the rifle in the field she said that it looked like some hippie had made a ty-died (SP?) rifle in earth tones....... :?

I have an idea to use on the next one. I will keep the patern about 1/4" away from the rifle so the lines are not as defined. It would have more of a fuzzy look to it....What do you think??

Well, as far as looks, I think everyone agreed it blended well in the outside environment, but if you need to take up a defensive position in the house hide behind the coffee table in the formal livingroom. :)
