Thoughts on Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40 scope?

    Hello guys,
I am putting together a Rem 700 SPS Tactical .308. I have some parts that I can trade to another guy for a Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40 scope "with tall target turrets and a parallax adjustment knob. it has a bdc reticle with 4 dots. I'm looking to get out to 1000 yards eventually, but may need to upgrade my glass before getting that far out. What do you guys think about this scope to get going with the rifle?

    I appreciate the help!

    Nik

I would prefer mil dots over the bullet drop compensation reticle, but on a trade, what do you guys think about getting started with this scope?

I rather expect that it's something you would grow out of fairly quickly.

Good deal. Thanks guys! Just thought that I would entertain it since there was an opportunity to trade for it. I will hold out. I was going to trade a complete DPMS AR lower for it, but I don't want to part with the lower for a scope that will be useless sitting in the safe in no time.

A scope that will reach 1000yds doesn't have to be outrageously expensive, but you really have to look carefully at just what you want. As a first scope for those on a budget, a fixed 10x will work, but if you are going for 1K then that may not be enough power.

There are a number of well made optics out there today and prices are steadily giving you more scope for your money each year. Figure out what you have for a budget for scope, base, and rings. Take some time and read some of the threads on optics and find something that meets your needs and budget.
