    Best scope under $500.00

I am looking for a scope for my new Remington 700 SPS Varmint 308, my budget is very limited, I really cant afford it,
but lets say $500.00 or less.

here is some info on what I am doing/looking for

    Remington 700 SPS Vamint
    308 caliber
long range hunting coyotes/deer usually 300-800 yards away across open fields with the occasional close 200 yard shot.
maximum range would be a 1000 yards just to see what happened.
most shots will be made sitting or prone with a rest, ambush style.
I plan on a better stock with cheek rest down the road, bed and float it, etc.
I would love an adjustable power, but that may not be in the budget.
I really dont think more than 12 power would be needed.

I had a Wonder optics 2-12 power recently and it was a fine scope, but I regrettably traded the gun for a boat motor.
input, comments, snide remarks? thanks in advance.

If you read here a lot, then you will know that this is one of the most commonly asked and answered questions. And the answer is mostly to stick with a fixed power scope such as the one you name.

I have what I consider to be one of the very best scopes for just what you mentioned. It is a Sightron Big Sky II 3-12x42 with a mil-dot reticle. Super clear and bright, very light, quick resettable turrets, and a versatile zoom range. New, they are a bit over $500, but I will deal on mine. Send a PM or e-mail..........shootclay AT live DOT com.

I love the fixed power SS you mentioned, but for hunting, I'm not sure I'd want a 10x fixed. I'd rather have a 3-9x or something along those lines.

Not trying to pick a fight here, but I pray your not taking shots on deer or any other big game animal at 800 plus yards.

no, I dont really hunt, I just shoot paper, and targets, (24 years military) but I am one of those doomsday preppers, and this will by my long range protection if the apocalypse happens, otherwise I just kill paper.
I mentioned long range shots on animals to be more politically correct and keep the black SUV's from pulling up in my driveway.

    Roger that....

I'd still go with a variable. How about the SS 3-9x?
SWFA SS 3-9x42 Tactical 30mm Riflescope

This makes for a fine "coyote" scope. I have one on my "big game" rifle.

My economy LR scope is a 30mm tube Mueller 4.5-14x40mm AO Tactical $190
Not the best, but it works good for what it is. I have several of them.

The Sightron Big Sky mentioned above is a great scope with great glass and a no fault replacement warranty that is unbeatable. I own two of them. For hunting longer distances I was truly impressed with the Nikon Monarch with BDC reticle. I zeroed my RRA predator pursuit at 200 yds. with a 62 grain bullet. Without having to dial up just dropped down to the last circle and hit the sihouette at 600 yds back to back. I had my doubts at first but not anymore. The nikon can be had within your budget as well. This allows you to dial up to 1000 yds easily using the bdc reticles.
