    Side pic of the 5.56(18) in current config ...

    This is one of my most accurate setups currently ... with the .300WM being the other ... both are "custom" builds ... just a bunch of parts ...

    The 5.56(18) is a larue (predar) barrel (1/8) and bolt in a BCM carrier with a colt upper with old style daniel defense rails. The lower is ut arms (made in KS) with timney 3lb trigger and magpul furniture ...

    The scope is burris xtr2 5-25x scr-mil on a riser ... with an atlas bipod and SPW556 on front.

    For the record I'm zeroed with 77gr TMK Black Hills load ... but strangely ... the Freedom munitions .223 55gr reman load seems to be a very close match in terms of external ballistics ... I'm using the .223 FM Reman 55gr because that is about 30 cents per round and is the cheapest I've got in 5.56 and I'm preparing for a "social" shoot ... but this FM .223 55gr is useful since it is matching the 110 cents per round 77gr TMK BH, at least out to 500yds. In -7F the 55gr was about 2 inches low ... and at 50F it is about 2 inches high .. but at 500yds ... that is still in the ball park.

    Counting scope and all parts shown on the rifle (including the ATF stamp) ... this is a $3,500 setup (not counting magazines and ammo). Not a super duper setup ... but surprisingly accurate.

    I consider this to be a training rifle ... but it is a useful one ...

    Note, I would not normally have the B5-25x scope on this rifle, but I am preparing for a competition shoot where this rifle will be the spotter's rifle (my rifle) for my buddy who will be shooting my .300WM with the 3-15x Burris xtr2 scr mil ... so I want to have the spotter scope mounted on the rifle ... we will both shoot in the competition and spot for each other. Distances in this competition run from 200yds out to 1400yds ... but most run between 200-500yds. The designated scope for this rifle is the Burris xtr2 1.5-8x CQ Mil ...

    Goal: 5.56(18) at 500yds with 55gr FM (Reman).

    Environment: Weather.com calls this "heavy fog" ... I call it "moderate mist". There is a lot of visible water in the air. It was actually raining from 0900-1030 ... but paused and so I kitted up and rolled out to the pasture on the 4-wheeler.

    Equipment: 5.56(18), 55gr FM (Reman), LRF, Kestrel. Burris XTR2, 5-25x SCR-MIL (set on 15). SPW556 on front. Atlas bipod. 2 x 20 rd PMAGS with 10rds each.

    Activity: As I rolled across the pond dam, I noted that the steel target was still standing (200yds away). Then rolled up to the 500yd FP and set up. Here is pic of from the 500yd FP.

    ==

    Fired 10 rds, got 7 hits ... not great ... but I did lower the tripod one notch during the firing to get a more level position.

    ==

    Repainted target and fired second 10 rd group. Got 10 hits, more like it.

    Summary/Results: The target was not super clearly visible through the mist, but I could see it. I was aiming a little low right due to a tiny bit of wind barely off my right shoulder and due to the 55gr hitting a little higher at this temp than the 77gr I'm zero stopped for at 500yds.

    Scopes I've sold in past 4 years (since I started shooting scoped rifles) and why:

    AIM Sports 3-9x
    This was my first scope ... it cost $182 dollars and had a dot sight mounted on top (45 degree angle to the right). I got this as a "training" scope. What I learned is that "crappy scopes are crappy". But it also helped me learn an even more important lession ... "crappy scope mounts are really crappy" !!!
    The one decent purpose I put it to use for towards the end of its time with me ... was I clipped my ATN PS-22 i2 clipon in front of it ... and used it has a handheld spotter ... and in that role it was pretty useful for intermediate to long distance spotting versus items in the open. Oh and the dot site was useless ...
    I sold it with my first .22LR so there would be a scope on the .22LR and because I had no use for it as a rifle scope ... just as a magnifier for my nv clipon when used as a hand held monocular ... which was very rare .. after I got PVS-14s and thermals.

    L&S 3.5-10x TMR M2
    This was my second scope ... and I used the hecque out of it ... and I still sort of miss it. It was an SPF, so the reticle was nice and large. I got in to the habit of running it only on either 3.5x or 10x ... so the holds were completely known. Day or night with nv clipon or not. It had MOA turrets, but the clicks were accurate - even if looking at the marks on the turret wasn't. But I used it mostly at night, so I didn't look at the turrets ... I just counted the clicks ... and it was accurate out to 600yds, which is as far out as I used it. But compared to the burris scopes I use now, it was smaller and lighter. It had decent illumination though I rarely used it.
    This was the same scope used on the Army 7.62 AR-10 clone (M-110) ... it came in a sort of metalic FDE.
    I sold it on top of my Sig 7.62 patrol because it bought it to go on that rifle and they looked like they belonged together ... and the guy I sold the combo to seems very happy ...

    L&S 8.5-25x TMR M1
    This was my fifth scope and sort of an impulse buy because I saw it for a surprisingly low price. No illumination. The M1 turrets are the same as the M5 except the M1s are MOA. The TMR is of couse MIL. But that didn't bother me as I translated everything to inches in my head anyway. The turret clicks were accurate ... the M1/M5 turrets ... I don't find "mushy" as some do ... I find them solid.
    I didn't use this scope much really. I used it on the .338LM the most ... and mostly on 8.5x at 500-600yds on my land. I cranked it up to 25x at 600yds because I was in the weeds and couldn't see the target from prone position except on max power. This was SPF scope.
    I sold it on the .338LM because I needed to have a scope on there for the package.

    Vortex 1-6x MILR G2
    This was a hard scope to sell and I still miss it. The illumination was a single dot in the center ... but it was tiny and bright and great for day time hunting ... The reticle was fine for out to 400 yds ... for 5.56 ... but after that the windage and elevation markings were insufficent. And that was my major beef with it. 2 mmils for windage ... and 3.5 mils for elevation ... not enough. And it was heavy.
    I sold it to my primary shooting buddy ... he asked for it ... and I sold it .. because I was still searching for the "perfect" DMR scope. The image on this scope was the best I've seen ... but for me ... it wasn't the perfect DMR scope ... though it was very close.

    Vortex 1-4x MIL
    I had high hopes for this scope ... but the reticle was too small for me, even on 4x ... not usable at 500yds ... it did not stay in my inventory very long.

    Vortex 3x Spitfire
    Another short lived attempt ... reticle too small ...

    Bushy TRS-32 ... got this to put in front of Bushy Equinox digital NV ... and it worked sort of ... but the 5 MOA dot magnified by the 4.5x NV gave me a 22.5 MOA dot which was larger than the target! Did not last long in the inventory. I think the sales price was $15. I surprised I got that for it.

    EO-TECH ... I was an EO-TECH defender until I got a Holosun, then I realized how faded and broken up my EO-TECH dot was ... the Holosun dot was bright and tiny and one single dot ... and it still is .. .so I finally returned the EO-TECH for the refund. I had bought the EO-TECH magnifier separately, so I kept it to use with one of my holosuns.

    ACOG 3.5x 5.56 ... this is pretty good out to about 400yds ... but at 500yds or above ... the reticule is too fuzzy with respect to the target. And not enough reticle support for distances 500yds+ ... no diopter ... so I sold it.

    ELCAN 1x/4x ... very good image ... compact package ... extremely clear glass ... no fuzzy even at 500yds ... even with no diopter ... and good options for illumination ... but 2 problems ... cost and lack of strong reticle support for 500yds + ... I took a 10% hit selling it over what I paid for it ... but I got experience using it ... and for a "fancy dot sight" ... it is the greatest .. it just isn't the "DMR Scope" I wanted.

    ==
    NV/Thermal

    ATN PS-22
    This was my first NV clipon. I ran it on .22LR and Sig 7.62 stoner ... It worked out to 600yds ... but I had to rezero when putting it on ... or use a 4 moa windage/7 moa elevation offset ...
    I usually just rezeroed. I sent it in to get "recollimated" ... but there was no change in the performance. So I sold it. But it was of immense help in introducing me into the world of night vision ... I had it for 2.5 years ... and it was all I had for the first 1.5 years ... so I don't regret having it.

    Armasight Apollo 324(60)
    This was my first thermal. It could be used as a clipon or as a stand alone 1x sight. I acutally used it more as a 1x sight and a handheld ... it was decent in this function ... but I wanted to
    "upgrade" so I traded it in to Armsight ... as a part of a multi-thermal deal. For what it is, I actually recommend it. For hog hunting under about 150 yds ... it is great.

    Armasight Zeus 75mm, 3x, 640(30)
    This was my second thermal ... and as far as accuracy out to 500yds ... it has the best track record. Multiple 3 inch groups over multiple sessions. And it has a very clear image .. .I'd say the clearest for Armasight that I've seen. But I wanted to upgrade to the Zeus Pro, 100mm, 4x, 649(60) and I did ... though for most hunting purposes ... the Zeus 75mm, 3x, 640(30) is far better. But the Zeus Pro, 100mm 640(60) is the upper edge in terms of recoil (.50BMG) and long distance ... it has a mil reticle and can support 8x and 16x for final target engagement and can be zeroed on several of my rifles to enable it to reach out to 900yds. So long distance and recoil are advantages of the current thermal .. though I gave up some image clarity and usabiity for most hunting scenarios.

    Pulsar XD50A, 50mm, 2x, 384(50)
    This is/was a great thermal scope. I sold it to my main buddy, I wanted him to have a thermal and he wanted this one. I 'upgraded' to the IRD-Mk2 35mm ... which cost more but has the best thermal image I've seen. Though it actually isn't so much better than the Pulsar ... though it is better. But in terms of "bang for the buck" ... the Pulsar is #1. But now my buddy has a thermal and I have an IRD. Win, win.

    Pulsar XD50, 50mm, 2x, 384(50)
    This is the OLED version. The image was clearer than XD50A (backlite LED) but not $1000 better, so I sent it back.

    Pulsar, XD75A, 3x, 384(50).
    This was my first attempt to replace the Zeus, 75mm, 3x, 640(30) and it failed. The XD75A image was terrible. Maybe it was a lemon. I sent it back.

    ATN THor HD 19mm, 1.25x, 384(30)
    This was a crappy, not finished thing. No image at all on black hot (white screen). Fuzzy image on white hot ... very fuzzy beyond 100yds. 2 inches per click at 25 yds in terms of zeroing. Not usable as a hunting thermal. I sent it back. See my review earlier in this thread.
