How long does a gun dealer keep records?

A couple of days ago,I went to get my favorite Remington 700 BDL rifle in .300 Winchester magnum and it's accompaning 3-9x50 Leupold Vx II scope to sight it in for hunting. It wasn't there on the rack where it belonged.I searched my house from stem to stern and did not find it.I knew it to be in the rack the week before. This leads me to believe that it has been abscounded , probably by someone I know. Before I go to police with my difficulty, I need the seriel number.I purchased the rifle about 10 years ago. Not having their phone number, and rather than drive 75 miles to where I bought it to find some statute has the info destroyed,I thought I'd pose the question to SC folks.

My store is the same way, but I believe my local/state law only requires 5yrs.

    Call the Police immediately.

Yep. Call police immediately; it removes some of your personal liability for what happens with the rifle out of your posession immediately. Sorry man, that's no fun. Hope everything works out for the best.

Thanks guys. I'll notify the local authorities, I just thought it would help them in a search of pawn shops and used rifle dealers if they had the serial numbers.I'll take a trip to Cicero were I bought the rifle. The worst part is I haven't hunted deer with any other rifle for so long that I dread getting used to another rifle.I'm gonna miss that rifle. And the Leupold VxII.

Thanks for the positive vibes, guys. One consolation I have is I bought a new barrel for it and was going to install it after the deer season ended. The perp got a mag with a worn out barrel that barely holds two inches at 100 yards.Guess I should start looking for a receiver.
