    What Caliber and what gun

    Hey guys!
I'm pretty sure this question as been ask before, but i think a weapon choice is case by case.
I'm not a hunter, i don't like killing for fun, i'm not gonna eat from what i killed so whats the point. I shoot at target, object.
I'm a beginner, got much to learn.
For now i'm shooting with a .17 HMR Mako Savage. Awesome gun, really precise. But absolutly no feeling, no kick nothing. I shoot at square ice cube about 1"x1" at 100yard. windy or not.
I'm looking for a new rifle, bigger caliber, way more range (anything around 1000 yard). Sniper style for sure, i like the feel of it. So i'm wondering what caliber should i use, and then what brand. I'm shooting at target so i don't want something special, with special bullet that will cost triple the price, i want something common so the bullet price stay reasonable.

I know shooting at 1000 yard got so much variant to calculate and bla bla bla. My life is not in danger idc if i miss. i wanna learn and have fun

    Thank you!

You really can't beat the bang for the buck (pun intended) from one of Mel's packages. One of these rifles shooting a .308 Win will be affordable accurate and a blast to shoot.

I have a thread going about a Remington 700P 308WIN and a Savage 12LRP 6.5 Creedmoor. I'll have a range report this Monday night. Good luck with whatever system you choose.

Either of those (one of Mel's packages or a Savage 10 with a heavy barrel and good optic) will be capable of exceeding your abilities out to 800-1000 yards. 308 Win. is by far the most common, and therefore the caliber with the best availability/selection in terms of match-grade ammo. If you're just looking to do that, these are probably your best options.

.243 .260 .308 .30-06 All good calibers that can reach 1,000yds. They all have good available ammo, long barrel life, and great accuracy.
If I had a target rifle to pick right now "off the shelf" so to speak, I would go for a Savage 12LRP in .260cal. Of course I would have to top it with a Nightforce 5.5-22x's scope
I'm a Remington guy at heart, but the new Savage's are just more accurate out of the box. If you want to go inexpensive then a Sav.10fcp, Sav.12fv, and new Sav.12LRP are accurate rifles under $1,000. I don't know how much the 12LRP is but the 10fcp and 12fv are around $600.
Anyway, just a few thoughts of mine. Hope it helps.

I'll agree with the .260 although I'm a .308 kinda guy. You can assure yourself a good shooter and go with the Rem 700P in .308......IF the Savage is not up your alley.

I think this is becoming a Savage website?

And Boost, where can we find this Remy/Savage post?

I have no problem with Remington's at all - I just don't yet have the machinery necessary to make it an accurate shooter by myself.....YET
