For what purpose? I have different guns for different purposes.

Specifically, a sidearm to pair with a precision rifle in the field setting.

Pends on the field, but I would select something I could HIT with out to 50-75 yards. I would also select something I could hit with QUICKLY at 1 to 7 yards.

Given the above statements, I would not worry too much about the caliber that filed them, as long as it's at or above .357 diameter. I would choose the largest caliber that would still fit the prior considerations.

I would not worry too much about weight or size...I would worry about durability and reliability of the weapon under "field" condition usage.

I would select durable, non-adjustable night sights...and not those candy...erm...plastic fiber things...TRIJICON with H3. I would not select a ramped "bomar style" rear sight.

I would consider availability of ammunition in the AO, should I become separated from friendly units, or run out.

For me, the best answer would be a full-size Glock or Sig in 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP. It would not be a Beretta product, and it would not be a JM Browning design.

Ideally, a metal framed SA or SA/DA full size like a SIG P226 (I like .357 SIG alot...) or maybe a Nighthawk Custom in 10mm. My budget is a long way from either of those at the moment though...

I be hopelessly hooked on the 1911 platform, with the current carry piece being a Springfield Loaded model. The new Range Officer model looks like a good piece worth checking out. Carry is either with a CompTac Minotaur (IWB) or DM Bullard Bodyguard (OWB). Backup is a Sig P238 (1911-style in .380) with holster options of Bullard PWC or Kangaroo Carry.

I'm actually wondering what you all use for a sidearm while out in the field/range with all of your precision rifle gear.

Do you go smaller size or full size? Holsters?

How do you carry the sidearm without it getting the way - IE prone, backpacks, etc.etc.

I have my ccw sidearms sorted, but I'm working on deciding on a sidearm/gear to pair with my rifle. I have an XD-45 tactical that I'm considering.

"In the field" or not, carry choice and method doesn't change for me.

    Re: Your choice in sidearm?

    I would say a Sig 226 or a 1911...

    Nate,

Could you please expand on your reasons as to why no Beretta or JMB? I am sincerely curious, not questioning. I am young and have much to learn and know you are more than qualified and give great advice and instruction.

    Thanks,

    Chris

my opinions pry do not have enuff experience behind them to base any of your decisions on, but with that being said i prefer to carry my 226 tac ops 9mm in a blackhawk concealment holster. accurate, easy to find ammo, simple easy breakdown/clean, large clips for plenty of fire. holster can be worn in a variety of configurations due to adjusting the angle so gear does not get in the way and sig stays put through any activities i've put it through. i do really like the draw on it also, full grip, and trigger finger just slides from holster right to trigger quickly. i tried a tactical drop leg holster and it was always making my pants get bunched up, moving around and catching on things. just did not work for me.
