factory loads for the .308 savage

Has anybody had any luck with any factory loads for a savage fcp .308? Owners manual said they used federal 168's. I had some good groupings with the remington 150core locks. Just wondering. Im a new shooter and also wanted to know how can you tell when you have copper fouling? I used mel's procedure for break in.

I have an older 110FP .308 (24" 1:10) and so far the HSM 178gr A-max seem to be at the top of the list. I have not tried the FGMM yet.

My best group @200yds w/HSM 178 A-max was a .8" 3 shot group. Overall that day they averaged 1.4" groups.

I do have a box of the newer Hornady 178's to try along with HSM 168 HPBT's.

Can you use the 178's for 100 yds as well, or just for the 200 yd +? Like I said, Im pretty new to shooting a tactical rifle so I will try the HSM's.

I'm pretty green as well, I was told that the .308 round may not stabilize (go to sleep) at 100yds and that it would be to my advantage to just start at 200.

I thought about trying 100yds as there are plenty of folks on here that do shoot 308's at that range that have pretty nice results. I'll probably stick to 200 as that's what I have as a baseline.

Nothing to worry about. The 168 grain and the 175 grain bullets will stabilize just fine at 100 yards.

I believe that your Savage has a 1-10 twist. It will shoot both bullet weights extremely well. My Savage 10FP will shoot right 1/2 MOA all day long at 100 yards with both 168 and 175 grain ammunition. My department issues Gold Medal Match with the 175 grain MatchKing; before, we were using 168 grain. Both rounds are of excellent quality; but if you plan on shooting past 600 yards, I would stay with the heavier bullet.

My Savage 10FP eats up Federal Soft point 150 grain hunting ammo 308 all day. I get pretty good groupings with it, some that you would have to have been there to believe. Not bad for 13 bucks at Wal-Mart
