Factory ammo then try some Hornady 168 AMAX, Black Hills 168s and Fed 168s. You should find one of them to work very well. If you were shooting out past 500 yards I would advise you to go with a heavier bullet in the 175/178 range or a 155 as both work better than the 168 at longer ranges.

    You handload?

    Rob,

Thx for the info. I do not handload and don't plan to for a while. You mentioned factory ammo, any suggestions?

    Thx.

funny, i was doing a search for this same topic.

    anyway,

i have verified zero @ 100 yards with my 700 SPS Tactical, I've been using 168gr Privi "match grade" - i have a 1 in 12 twist barrel, 20" (dealer exclusive model).

a gentlemen @ the store recommended 168gr, inclined to take Privi over Winchester's. whatever, they were the same price.

so I plan on taking it to 200, then 300 yards.

Q: Should I stick with the 168gr or go heavier or lighter for 200 / 300 yards?

I'm relatively new to the .308 realm, been shooting .223 up until a few weeks ago.

168 grain bullets should take you right out to 600 yards without too much trouble, as long as you do your part.

Huan those three are factory loadings:
    Hornady 168 AMAX
    Black Hills 168 HPBT Match
Federal Gold Medal Match 168 HPBT
    And add to those:
    HSM 168 HPBT
    HSM 168 AMAX

If you wanted to try some heavier loadings there are:
Federal Gold Medal Match 175 HPBT
    Black Hills 175 HPBT
    Corbon 175 HPBT
    HSM 175 HPBT
    HSM 178 AMAX

Mel sells HSM here on SC for a good price http://www.snipercentral.com/hsmammo.htm He also sells some 155 loadings too.

168's are fine at any range as far as I am concerned. Like Rob said the further you go out you may want to get to a heavier (at least higher BC) bullet. You can look around online and find some 118LR's or FGMM 175's that would be good for long range if you don't handload. BlackHills makes good ammo as well. Or you may even get lucky like I did and have a rifle that likes American Eagle 150's.

Think of it this way. Most people like steak. Is there a really big difference between a NY Strip and a Porterhouse? My rifle liked the Round Steaks so it is good for my budget. Besides I get Fed brass to reload with.

For out to 300 there will be nothing wrong with hunting paper with 168's.
