    6.5X55 Swedish load data

I have two (hope soon to be threee or four) Swedish Mausers, one sporterized M38 short rifle and one soon to be restored M96 long rifle.

I was looking in the 7th Edition Hornady reloading manual and I was wondering if anyone here might have a pet load, or a certain type of factory load they like for thier Swede?

    Thanks for the help.

    For the Swedish Mauser try

140 grain Sierra bullet with IMR-4350 or H-4350 powder. Work up your own load.

The 160 grain Hornady round nose is a good bullet with H-4350 or IMR-4350. Try 43.0 grains of either powder.

The 120 grain Sierra Pro Hunter is another fine bullet. Try 46 grains of H-4350.

    Thanks Fluffy

one additional question, the Hornady reloading manual cautions about heavy loads in the M96 type action. My question is , what exactly constitutes a heavy load in a 6.5 Swede?

One that exceeds the data in the manual.

But all of my loads are safe. The Swedish Mauser was designed for loads in the 45000 psi range. Stick to that level and you will be just fine.

My pet load for the 6.5X55 is 45.0gn of ADI AR2213SC driving a 140gn Sierra SPBT GameKing (with bullet seated the full length is 77.5 mm) at average muzzle velocity of 2588.2 fps out of my 1942 Husqvarna M38, this produces a 26.5mm grouping at 200metres. You have to be careful to keep the pressure down by steering clear of maximum loads, the M38 is after all over 65 years old. Best of luck.

Thanks for your help, I like the looks of the Sierra loads and the loaded ammo I've found. I'll be shooting a pretty elegant sporterized M38 fir hunting and my recently restored M96 for fun and want to reload for both once I find out what particular load they both like.

44 grains of RL22 and a 142 smk seated to 3.150" oal. This gets you about 2500fps and .80" groups out of a sporterized m96. Be aware of barrel heat, as it effects accuracy in these older rifles.

My reloading manual lists Varget as the most accurate powder in their test m96 rifle, so I'll work up some loads with that powder in the near future and list the results.
