New scratch build in 7mm-08 thoughts?

Just rounding up the cash to build a new 1000m rifle. I have been pouring over data and seem settled on 7mm-08. I want to target shoot out to 1000m and take medium sized game with it. I was going to go with the tried and trusted .308 but I don't use mil-surp ammo and I'm not concerned about any shtf scenario. I also hand load already so talk me out of it. I'm thinking Remington 700 as the base just because of a availability of goods. Although I did have a Howa 1500 that shot constantly 3" low but grouped beautifully !

I like the idea of the 7mm-08, but have heard that pressure issues are easy to run into with that cartridge.

If 7mm is what you want, why not build a straight .284 Winchester. You will get your 7mm pills going fast enough for both hunting and target shooting well past 1000 meters without running into over pressure (for those purposes).

I like the ease of reloading 7mm-08. FL size .308 brass down, done.

Try and get 162 amaxs or the new 171 match burners.

I have been eyeballing a Stainless Remington in 7mm-08 for a few months at a local pawn shop.

In a laminated stock, used good condition, lightweight Mountain profile barrel for $450.

Comes with a throwaway Simpson scope too.

Should I buy it just to have a short action to build later?
Where in central GA is the OP from.

Around here if it is in a caliber that Wal MART doesn't carry ammo for it will not be popular.
It would be a good low recoil load for my wife. Good hog gun. When the barrel is worn out then go for a full on SA build in 6.5 Creedmoor.

I'm located in Cochran Ga. Small town south east of Warner Robins.

Hmm no negatives apart from watching pressure. Sounds good.

The other thing is I don't think (and I could be way wrong) you are going to be able to get great performance with heavy 7mm pills like you would in the .308.

Anyways. For me, Out of the two you presented, I would choose .308 Win. But if I was building a dial purpose rifle (target and hunting) I would build a .284 Win or a .284 Shehane. That would knock an elk out of its socks with a good hunting bullet, and ring steel at 1400-1500 yards.

7mm-08 is a excellent cartridge but you are limited to the max bullet weight of 168gr or less. This is what I have shoot for year in metallic silhouette, just last year I replaced that rifle and now I am building a 7mm shehane on the old 7-08 action. Still collecting pieces for the biuld.
