Yes, I believe in map and compass. GPS is even more problematic down this end of the world because most of the GPS satellites are in the Northern hemisphere, where most of the ICBM and strategic bomber targets are! I use 1:50,000 contour maps in conjunction with a Silva baseplate sighting compass which is graduated in mils and has adjustable declination.

I also know a couple of guys who used to work in our government's mapmaking organisation (now privatised). A few years back, the elder of the two told me that, whilst the contours on the old maps were based on manual surveys, the new map contours are based on photogrammetry. So ... if they took their aerial photos after a forest was felled, you get a fairly good impression of the terrain but if they took their contours off the tops of vegetation, the accuracy is reduced. In other words, know the limitations of your kit and try to run through your route with someone who knows the ground.

That is another reason to hold onto older maps!

A good shot at close range beats a 'hit' at a longer range.

I advocate a thorough knowledge of map and compass.
GPS is nice, but when Murphy strikes, what is plan B?

In a worst case situation this might be your only option:
