For your application "bullet holes at 300yds"... you might just consider good glass on your rifle (not sure what you're using). I can see bullet holes at 300 (under most conditions) with both my Leupold Mk IV 4.5-14x50 and my NF 3.5-15x50. I've not used the spotting scopes you mentioned... but you will probably find as I did, much more than $150 dollars must be spent on a spotting scope to beat the clarity of a decent scope. The spotting scopes you mentioned may work but you'll probably run into empty magnification past 20x-24x. A spotting scope is a great tool but you may hold off on buying one untill you can afford to get good glass.
thanks land, Im using a SS 10x right now..
Ive always wanted a spotting scope.. and really dont have the funds right now (college and all) so thats about all the money i have.
I have a Simmons that was $80 or $100 dollars, I've been really happy with it. I'll get some more details when I get home.
I'm in the same boat. I spent a fair amount on a new rifle. But can't afford the spotting scope. I'd like to get out to 1000 yds but that will have to be range known and with metal gongs, otherwise I won't know where I'm shooting. My guess is for a good 1000 yd glass I will need to drop another grand on a good spotting scope, afterall I was willing to spend a grand on my rifle scope, I should have taken into account that I would need that for a spotting glass as well.

Every time that rifle was leveled at us, to see it rest motionless as if poised on a rack, to know when the hammer fell the messenger of death drove unerringly to its goal, to know this and still march on was awful
I have the Konus. It works very well for seeing bullet holes at 100 yards and further. At 300 yards seing .22 bullet holes is nonexistant. It ain`t happening, for me and my eyes. For the price, it works for what I need. Bought two, one for me, and one for a friend.
