    Do i need a 20MOA base?

A while back i wrote a topic asking about elevation on my nikon scope. After going to the range yesterday my elevation knob maxed out on my way to 600 yards. Basically from my zero point (100 y) i only had 15MOA until the elevation maxed out. I probably have 25 MOA going down from my zero point though. My scope already sits really close to the barrel, so what would help? If i install a 20MOA base wouldn't it touch the barrel? Help me fix the problem so i can shoot long ranges!! If pictures would help i posted a topic in the gallery section a while back titled "New member showing off rifle" thanks!

40gt, The objective lens on my nikon sits really close to the barrel just like in the picture.

I'm afraid of I install a 20 MOA base the objective lens will contact the barrel. Anybody have any ideas?

You have a 40mm objective on the Nikon?

What type of rings do you have on it now?

I would have to doubt that a 20MOA rail would cause your objective housing to touch the barrel, if you have any clearance now.

My nikon has a 42mm objective. I have leupold rings on it now. The objective lens has clearance now, but it's only 2 or 3mm. But a 20MOA rail would tilt the front of the scope down correct? Wouldn't that touch?

    THAT might would touch.
Thats why I asked which rings you had.

I know I use and have used 42mm up to 50mm objective scopes, with low "tactical" style (Badger, TPS) rings on a 20 MOA rail and have never had a problem.

So, you have the scope, you need a 20 MOA rail for the extra up....so why not just pick up a set of TPS TSR rings?
I had a 42mm Monarch, TPS low rings, and a Badger 20 MOA rail and it worked very well. Lots of clearance, but not too high.

So you think new rings AND a rail would make it work? Are the rings your talking about quality rings?

    Re: Do i need a 20MOA base?

You won't know if the obj. end of your scope will touch until you get the 20moa base down. All bases are not created equal. Some may only raise the rear or (eye) end of the scope. If the base you get only raises the rear, then it will work on your setup. Some are made taller than what you have so this would work too. If your going to shoot at 600yds and further you'll need to have a canted base anyway it sounds like. Buy and mount the base first then go from there. At least thats what I would do. Unless you want to put a couple of shims under your current base, but I'd make that a last resort.
    Hope this helps

Yes, they are of good quality.

Another thing to consider is, if you only have 2-3mm now, if you decide to use Butler Creek caps, your going to be too close to the barrel without the canted rail.

I'd swap out the rings and go with a 20 MOA rail. A set of TPS rings will set you back $70 bucks?

    Here's a Remington 700, a 4.5-14x40mm VX-3, TPS low rings, and a Badger 20 MOA rail.
