    Re: Need Gunsmith

Well, we are usually a bit skeptical when we get users making requests like this, because usually, once they find out the price tag for this level of work on their action, they shy away from it... but, you asked.

    I'd choose from these:

    Mike Rescigno, Tactical Operations.
    Bill Roscoe, Louisiana Precision.
    George Gardner, GA Precision.
    Greg Tannel, Gre-Tan Rifles.

Add to that just about any of the BR bolt rifle smiths from the list at AccurateShooter, and you have a good number of choices.

Thanks Nate. I'm a big boy I wouldn't have asked the question if I was afraid of the answer. I do appreciate you taking the time to give me some good sound advice.

    Re: Need Gunsmith

To the OP, I have an R5 also and am pretty new to the long range shooting circle. My bolt is really smooth and other than wanting a tac-knob I'm curious what kind of tweaking can be done to a bolt. Can someone enlighten me? :?:

    Re: Need Gunsmith

To be completelty clear, the OP is talking about the entire action, not just the bolt. Working from the front backwards, not in order of machining:

    -Square action face
-Replace recoil lug with a ground lug, and double pin the lug in place
    -Single-point ("SP") recut threads
-SP cut action lug cams and faces
-cut coned bolt head and corresponding cone on barrel with 0.010" clearance
    -SP Square boltface
    -SP Square bolt lugs
-Reduce Firing Pin Tip diameter and bush the bolt's firing pin hole
-Replace Remington Extractor with a Sako or M16 or..
-Enlarge and true action raceway diameter
-Bush the bolt to match the new diameter
    -Polish lug raceways
-Install side bolt stop if desired (this means no side-mount receiver sights...)
-cut bolt handle off, drill, thread, and TIG weld a threaded receiver for bolt handles
-Install new firng pin group that is lightened, or otherwise "optimized"
-Install Winchester-style 3-position bolt shorud safety to preclude the need for a safety in the trigger group (the Winchester's better and safer anyhow).
-Mill cut a clip slot if desired
-Install trigger hanger for the use of Anschutz trigger groups
-Flute action, flute bolt, drill/flute bolt handle to reduce weight
-Enlarge and retap scope mout holes to #8-32
-Hand fit scope rings and/or rails to the individual action

I'm sure that's not all of them, and some of those will not be done with others on the list (eg: bolt's do not get fluted AFTER they are bushed...different purposes for the rifle).

Look at Greg Tannel's site for more ideas about what CAN be done to fix the Remchester actions.
