Opinions on New Rifle Build
This is my first post. Getting in to the long range game and would like your opinion on the rifle build. My goal is to have an accurate easy on the shoulder 1,200 yard gun. It will be a target gun only. I'm 62 years old so won't be doing too much running and gunning. I’ve shot rifles since I was a kid and can competently hit 500 yard targets with my hunting rifles.
So far this is where I'm at but not committed.
Caliber - 6.5x47 Lapua
Action - Stiller Tac-30
Barrel - 26" SS Bartlein 8:1 Medium Palma #11
Stock - Manners T4A with detachable mag.
Scope - Leaning towards the Vortex HD Gen II 4.5x27 with HBR-2c reticle but considering something else with the Horus 59 reticle.
My question is would you get a MOA or Mrad? And what are the best rings to get for this setup?
The only thing I'm sure about is the 6.5 caliber and the Bartlein barrel. Everything else can change. I've dropped a lot of animals with the .264 mag. over the years so I'm a fan of the 6.5 caliber.
Sure would appreciate any wisdom sent my way.
I also posted this on Sniper's Hide. First post there too.
My opinion is that this is a good benchrest scope and a bit too much scope for tactical purposes. 6.5*47 Lapua is not going to reach 2700 yards (or even 1800 yards).
The 3-18*50 is less overkill for tactical purposes.
The scope passes the mil<->mil and MoA<->MoA reticle and turret test.

As for caliber the 6.5x47 will do just fine to 1200 yards. As for the scope the higher power and the extra 2oz is worth the extra money.
Thanks for the link. It answered a lot of my questions. Looks like I'm on the right track.
Welcome. Looks like a good start to me.
-I redefined trust between my wife and I. I bought her a gun, taught her to shoot, and made her the beneficiary on my life insurance.
Sounds like a nice build. I just built a 260 AI and am really liking the 6.5mm caliber.
The 4.5-27x56 Gen 2 is an awesome optic, and depending on the type and size of targets you will be shooting (paper, steel) the 27x is quite nice to have. The picture shows a 6' white target backer with a 3' target at 1k yards on 27x
