Of all things... a shotgun

Got a question, I just bought a Rem. Model 11/87 12ga. shotgun, and I brought it home and was just getting acquainted with it, and trying to run rounds through the action w/o actually shooting it, the odd thing about it is, I have to work the bolt release manually in order to cycle each round, where a normal semiautomatic rifle would just cycle the rounds it's self.

My question is, is this normal, the rounds not cycling, or do I need to send the gun back?

I would just go out and shoot it but the nearest range is just over an hour and a half away.

If you dont pull the trigger on a live round then you will have to cycle it manually. If you do fire a round and it doesn't cycle then there is something wrong.

Giving the nature of the question, might I make a friendly suggestion and suggest you get some tutoring before you take it to the range for the first time.
