I was just wondering what the forum members thaught of these 2 rounds.

The 7mm08 looks very respectable on paper mostly due to the HIGH BC projectiles available to handloaders. On my ballistics program the 7mm08 is on par to the 308 in many attributes and out does it in others, particularly with the Hornady 162g A-Max projectile.

What do you think?

The 7mm08 has a good reputation of accuracy and is a plesant round to shoot. The .308 offers much more in the way of commercially loaded ammo and rifles. If you are handloading and building your own rifle, those factors do not matter.

Personally, I like the .260 Rem, based on the same .308 case, but you didn't ask about that one

There are two different 7mms based on the .30-06 case.

There is the German 7x64mm which came out around 1913 and then there is the US .280 Remington which came out in the 1950s.

The two rounds are slightly different and you cannot safely interchange them. But the rounds share the same loading data and deliver identical performance.

Mad.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I too like the 260rem and other 6.5mm calibers. 7mm08 comes with very good SD and BC projectiles although not as good as 6.5mm projies but it comes close.

Just not many rifles are chambered for the 6.5mm unless you go custom. With the 7mm08 there are greater choices in factory rifles although not as many as in .308.

On the 6.5mm selection I have seen an intresting European Tactical rifle chambered for 6.5x55SE. Its the SHR 970 and comes with a McMillan stock, have you heard of it?

Ah yes, I forgot about that rifle. Its made by Sig and is suppose to be a nice setup. I need to add that to my list of rifles to review. I remember it from about a year ago...
