Hey guys I think I decided on a Remington 700 SPS in .30-06...
for the rifle itself It seems the going rate here (tacoma washington) is $410. Does that sound about right to you guys? I plan on slapping a harris bipod on there which i've seen from 40-80 dollars depending on which one i get and a leupold 3.5-9x on it...anythoughts suggestion comments questions??? LET ME KNOW i like hearing from you guys, you seem to know your stuff!! :D

to be honest with you...it's one of those things i just don't know. I'm going with the .30-06 because it's what i am familiar with... I have no experience with the .308 and i have no doubt in my mind that it is a SUPERB round...i guess you could just say I am partial to the 06 I suppose.

my new SC3 is in 260 Rem, I have NO experience with this rifle. But I've heard many good things and did some research.

I would suggest you do the same for your rifle.

+1 on the 06. It has better ballistics than the .308 and handlels heavy bulletts bettwer. Many say the .308 is inherantly more accurate, but unless you are shooting a benchrest match it is academic anyway. Hornady makes light magnum ammo for it that gives 300 win mag performance. Good choice. BTW seem like a good price.

I have not exp. w/ the 06, I am just a die hard .308 fan. I am sure it will be a nice rifle.

Drew- I'll wait till BC gets back, he'll be doing my shooting............ :D

Edit: don't wanna steal this thread anymore.....but Drew, Mel has to be off limits......thats like having an Ace up ur sleeve.....

Nothing wrong with the '06 at all. More BANG in your stick! A very good round!! Good choice with the remmy rifle, later down the road you can have mele build you up a SC rifle on your action

I would like to have a '06 tactical rifle in the safe, but I don't...........Hey MELE.......

The tactical rifles you NEED in the safe are: 22LR suppressed (thanks be to Mele on this one), 223, 308, 30-06, 300WM, 50BMG. (You need a minimum of 2 of each) A can is optional, but recomended!

Ah yes, I shall chime in....

308 vs 30-06. An argument for the ages. The 308 was actually designed to get the same performance out of a shorter case (and action). It did just that... for a time. There is no denying that the -06 has more case capacity, and given that advantage, it can shoot the same bullets as the .308 at faster velocities... thats just physics.

The .308 fits in a short action, that also is physics. They are both accurate rounds and both are great, and I love them both. Neither one being "better" than the other. I'm a real fan of both.

So there is my opinion... just buy both, and I'm happy to build rifles in -06! I loved building drews, it turned out very nice.

The .30-06 vs. .308 debate:

For bullets that weigh 175 grains or less, I'd choose the .308

For heavy bullets--190 grains and up--I'd choose the .30-06.

The trajectory difference between the two rounds is insignificant.
The .30-06 is better suited when it comes to heavy bullets and handloading.

For a first rifle, you cannot go wrong with either, but you might be better off with a .308.

You left out the very best .30-06 loads. I like heavy bullets--190 grains and up.

And Sierra makes nice heavy bullets suitable for handloading in .30-06

My reasoning for liking the .308 is I think is a great beginner long range round. That is why I got it, and I am still very much, a beginner. There are 1,000,000,000 possiblities w/ .308. Not just in loads, but in aftermarket stuff, knowledge etc. I found it to be VERY easy to load for and a fun cartridge. Shot one 30/06 once, it was ok, but had more kick than my .308 and I don't see any significant advatage it offers.........but that is my personal opinion. I say reasearch the hell out of it......and buy what you think is best!

Drew- I have decided it would be unfair to pick on a 'special' child who has problems putting on his clothes correctly.........

Edit cuz i can't spell......and Rec is giving me **** about it.
