I love the rifle and I love the caliber. The gun is made in Japan by Howa. These were once imported by Smith & Wesson.

I am sure that it will be a fine shooter. But in all candor, I am doubtful about your scope. I don't like Simmons scopes. They are pieces of clinton.

I hope I am wrong about the scope. But if I owned that rifle I would get a Leupold. And to save money I would consider getting a fixed power scope. Leupold makes a nice fixed 4X scope that is a great value. It costs around $200 from Cabellas. ( I think that high powered variables are somewhat overated. They add weight, complexity and cost. And variables do not mean additional accuracy either.)

And while I am at it, I want to say that bullets weighing less than 180 grains are a waste of time in the .30-06. I would load the 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip as well as heavy Sierra Match Kings. As I type this, I am getting all hot and bothered. I'm drooling now and I have to go out and buy an '06.

All I can say is that you are a lucky bastard. Wish that gun were mine.

The Howa actions are also used on the Weatherby Vanguard series. I did a review on howa rifles here:

Mad, you might appreciate this then. Drew, a member of this list, will be taking delivery of a SC1A5 in .30-06 next week. I will be taking it out on monday/tuesday for test firing. It turned out nice with the McMillan A5 stock and adjustable cheek piece (saddle type).

I don't get too many -06 orders, but I sure like them
