I have an AR10 lower. I want to shoot steel at 1000 yards. I will be getting either one in a 20” barrel because PSA only has those in each. I dont know much about other companies so I don’t look.

With that being said, I would also add in that I do favor the 308 because I already reloading them. I also have the dies and shell plates already for the 6.5 anyway.

Which one in a 20” barrel would be more from to shoot 100-1000 yards?

I have a Ruger Precision in .65 Creedmoor with a barrel harmonic balancer at the muzzle end of a 24in barrel. If I have done everything right I get .35 to .40 MOA groups at 100yds. The balancer makes a great deal of difference. The RPR in 6.5C shoots sweet enough to shoot the entire day and still walk away being able to feel your shoulder; unlike 308 or 7Mag. There are lots of harmonic balancers so do your research.

Be forewarned that your psa upper will probably require a psa lower to function proper.
There are some differences in ar10 products that aren’t always compatible.

Ballistic Advantage and Aero Precision have 308 uppers now and then, slightly higher priced though.

If you reload I would get 260 rem. I have (2) 308 win AR’s both with 20” heavy barrels, I have (2) 260 Rem AR’s with 22” barrels. To me a range to accurately shoot is any range where the bullet does not drop below transonic zone about 1227 fps at sea level. For a 308 win shooting 169 Berger hybrid Target you can achieve 2,750 fps fairly easy. That puts the transonic barrier at 1,050 yds. With 200 yd zero, 10 mph crosswind you have 9.9 mills drop and 2.44 mils drift. So you can get there reliably but barely. Same zero and using a Berger 6.5. 144 gr Hybrid target out of the 22” 260 Rem at approximately the same muzzle velocity. 2,750 but it is transonic to 1,300 yds. At the same 1,050 yds the 260 delivers 8.6 mills drop and 1.75 drop. If you go with a 20” barrel you will be at 2,700 fps and performance will drop off a little transonic is 1,275 yds at 1,050 yds. 9.0 mils drop, 1.8 mills drift. So the 260 will outperform the 308 easily at 1,000 yds and is subsonic out to 1,280 yds , plus the 260 Rem has probably 15 % less recoil. If you prefer 6.5 Creed you are probably loosing 50 fps to 75 fps to the 260 Rem. So it will bring transonic back 25 or 30 yards. But it is still a better selection for 1,000 yds. I prefer reloading so I would go with the 260 Rem, if you are more inclined to buy off the shelf match AMMO go 6.5 Creedmoor.

Umm... I am hands down a 308 Win shooter within 1,000 yards AR 10 platform. If I want to shoot further then the AR 10 platform is out of the question. Moving to a bolt gun, anything over 1,000 is either my 28 Nosler, 300 RUM, or... the 338 Lapua Magnum. Enough said!

The 6.5CM is a better 1000yd cartridge.
I don't know about what either will do out a 20" barrel
My 6.5 is a 26" barrel and my 308 has a 24" barrel
