Hi guys. Just joined up. I enjoy shooting behind my house in rural Ohio. I be got out to about 500, but mostly shoot 100yds. I built a bench and all. So far, I've been a Savage guy. My #10 tactical type (fcp?), Drives nails! Anyway, wanna try a Remmy 700 in 308. I'm between a 700p ltr and a 5r. 20". Any recommendations? Basically same rifle, I think?

It's a low volume forum. Mostly guys that googled sniper forums land here their first time. They they stop googling that. Search for "long range" or "precision rifle" forums instead and you'll get more and better results. The difference between those two rifles that I can see is 5R rifling which is questionably an upgrade but not one I'd pay extra for.

A good friend of mine introduced me to the process of replacing a Savage barrel with relatively inexpensive tools and a set of go-no go gauges. I wouldn’t do the process justice so I won’t try, but the 308 heavy contour Shilen barrel drives tacks. I have a 700 Rem action that I had a smith put a Bartlien barrel in 6.5CM that also drives tacks. Now that I’ve seen how easy it is to replace a Savage barrel with stellar results, I may have to reconsider my dedication to Remy style actions. I think I could do the barrel swop on a Savage myself with a little investment in tools and a caliber specific set of go no-go gauges. These gauges are a little pricey..

Yeah, I really don't look for it to outperform my Savage, I just don't own a Remington except shotguns. Also, I believe both models I spoke of have 5r. I look at specs on different vendors' sites and some differ. Another thing they vary on is twist. On the police, some say 12, some say10. Some say 11.25. Don't really matter, I guess. I load 169 GMM clones. (Try to, lol)

I have handled both the 5R and the 700p rifles, but never shot one. The biggest attraction to them for me was that they came in a rigid stock from the factory, but the price was about $400 more than the SPS tactical. So I went with a SPS tactical 20" .308 with intentions to upgrade the stock later, this would be my recommendation due to the lower price of admission. I have heard that the 5R rifles are tack drivers though.

I got an OLD M1 carbine I just inherited from my dad. He got it from his. Really nice shape. Hoping I can barter it for a nice nice 700.

I occasionally get lucky and shoot a clover leaf 3 shot group , but most are about 3/4 "-1". I shoot off of a sand bag up front and a sand sock in the rear. Nothing earth shattering or impressive by most people's standards but I'm happy with it. It's my do it all rifle from hunting to target shooting. I shoot 168gr A-maxes over 41.6 gr of 4064.

Neither, Remington isn't what it used to be. Look at their recent history. Tiki or a Bergara B14 HMR.

Martino1,

I'm going to hafta look into that. I've pushed several hundred 338LM thru my savage 110 LE and sooner or later the groups will open and the problem will be the rifle and not me.

You’re burning somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 grains of powder if you’re using Retumbo or similar powder every time you send a round down range. If you load your own, you may be able to load them long and chase the lands and eeck out a few more rounds out of that barrel. Hopefully you’re not already pushing mag length for your accurate load now. Also SMKs seem to be forgiving with long throats due to attorney involvement in the rifle design process or burned out lands due to high round count. When my 308 barrel got tired, I probably could have loaded them long and still get some addional rounds out of the barrel if I didn’t mind single loading. The truth is I didn’t care to. I had illusions of placing well in PRS shoots in my area. That action got a 6.5CM barrel that’s a sweet shooter.

Bought a 700 off here recently and have fallen in love. Straight shooter, nice weight and smooth action. I'm looking at swapping out for a tactical stock but I reckon it's definitely the go.
