Topo and I have been dropping the hammer on a few rounds from the 600 yard line lat American Shooting Centers over the last few weeks. I just got some pictures back and thought I would share the view from our firing line out to the 600 yard (609 actually) berm and our favorite shilouette targets.

Randy and Jeff have their gear set up. Note the monster spotting scope - yep you can see bullet holes in paper from 600 yards with that beast, as long as the mirage is not swimming too much.

Jeff's Hammonds Custom swap barrel in .308 and 6.5x284 (currently wearing the .308 barrel) wearing its US Optics SN-3 3.8-22x58 glass.

Jeff on the line. You can just make out the light brown background for the targets at 600 yards (the last berm on the right)

Same spot better picture of the view to the targets - this time using the Patriot Arms M40A1 .308. Note the wind gauge mounted with a high tech rubber band on the spotting scope stand (so it can easily be rotated to face into the ever present Houston wind). Topo's shilouette target is easy to see on the left-hand side of the left-hand light brown panel.

Thanks for the pictures!! Great to look at!

I'll have to snap a few shots the next time I'm at my canyon range.... its quite the contrast to the nice level fields you guys have to shoot in. I love America, a bit of everything!!

Hmmm....that's an awfully small target.... But a great, if not a bit flat (and windy?), range.

You're lucky to have the option, though. Few ranges in Norway allow shooting over 300m. I know of two, maybe three, where you can strecth it out to 4-500m...but that's pretty much as far it goes. And it's most certainly not 100% legal. :(

re

Kam, I thought you used army ranges? Surely they go to 600m's?

We shoot the LSW from 600m's...

After some diesel-head 2Lt "borrowed" a IFV and blasted a carwreckage with the 30mm...after having filled the car with some thousand MG rounds and tried blowing it up with a home made petrol bomb...well, the armed forces got REALLY restrictive on letting their officers use the ranges unless it's organized training. And such organized training is only a myth because that would require ammo, ammo cost money...and the top brass prefer to spend money on themselves and not ammo for the boys. A sad, sad story...

The ranges aren't officially cleared for more than 300. But there's no danger in shooting at 4-500m. The police here are real tightasses when it comes to legal weapons owners. I think they're revenging themselves on us because they don't have the resources to go after the criminal wankers.....

SpEcTeR - Topo and I are at the 600 this morning.

Badshot - bring your butt out of the hunting blind long enough to kill some more paper at 600.

I'm up for something this weekend too. What day works for you (needs to be first thing - as in going hot at 8:00 am). Let me know.

I'll bring the Hammonds and the Patriot (so you can look through the Swarovski).

Subthermal - CORRECT. Its actually a dual use stelar and terestrial scope by Celestron. 50-156X yeah baby. Absolute stud at seeing trace. Topo and I used it again today, and saw trace virtually every shot except when the combination of wind, evaporation of the standing water, and a bit of mirage stomped nearly all visibility.

SpEcTeR - tomorrow morning, first round goes down range promptly at 8:00 am. See you there before 8:00 as it takes a bit of time to walk down and hang targets (incredibly muddy so no driving downrange for probably a week or so.

SpEcTeR - dude NO WAY - scuba works, but looking through the scope under water is not going to happen. The weather radar shows no respit for at least several more hours - We'll reschedule.

YEah I got up, heard the rain pounding the roof, gave the weather radar one long look and promptly pulled my stuff out of my car. Went back inside made some coffee, went into the garage (backed the my car out first) and reloaded .45 ammo instead. We'll do it up out there sometime in the near future.

You got to shoot the longer ranges to gain the coinfidence at longer ranges. Sounds more Zen than it is. It snot nearly as difficult as you think.

i should buy a few acres of land and build my own 500 yd range i wonder
what the legalities for that would be for louisiana

Not sure what the law in LA is, but in Texas if its your private land and you don't send a bunch of stray rounds into your neighbors land, you can shoot on your private land all you want - when you want (except within various city limits - but I think we all know you are not supposed to do that).

Now setting up and operating a commercial range is a totally different thing. Now you're tlaking HAZmat regs for clean up and shut down, etc.

Nice pics man. My buddy has access to a 1200yd range here in Nor Cal, its a private range on land owned by a gunsmith. He makes custom single shot .50 cal rifles for about 5-6 grand. When i went out there with him, we were hitting 8inch bulls at 1200 yards, and his scope wasnt dialed in yet. It was a custom barrel off an Abrams tank, milled and machines to fit on the lower reciever of an AR15, custom screw type bolt, and that rifle kicked like a mule, but fun as hell none the less.
