Hello:

I'm looking for a scope to put on the SC1A5 I recently ordered in .308.

I was thinking that the 3.5-14X 40mm with mil dot rectical would be pretty cool.

My question is, what is the difference between Leupold's Mark 4 "Precision Rifle" scopes and their more expensive "Long Range/Tactical" Mark 4 scopes?

Martin,

I figure you are probably tired of hearing from me, but I'll respond anyway.

1st, the scope you are looking at is a great scope, espcially for the money. The 30mm tube is a big reason why.

Now, to answer your question specifically. I wish leupold would not have changed their naming scheme on the tactical scopes, as it confuses everything more. The scope you are looking at is the same as a Vari-X III, the 3-9x PR tactical is a VariX II, and the top of the line LRs are what USED to be the Mk4's. The big difference is tube construction and knobs. (there might also be some difference in the lens coatings, but I'm not positive). The tubes on the big LR Mk4's are much stronger and robust, and the knobs are the M1's and M3's vs. the standard target turrets on the PR 4.5-14x.

mel is correct
i have a Leupold Mk4 PR 3-9x40mm on my Rem 700
i would say that it is a very good scope for the money, as is the VX-II (the same thing without target knobs) but it simply doesnt compare to the Mk4 M1 or M3
those are the finest scopes i have ever looked through
whenever i do i wonder why i bought a Mk4 PR but then i remember the price tag
