At my last LE Sniper School we used a motorized (generator) moving target system that had a pulleys with a rope/cable spanning approx 40-50 yards. Paper targets (sideways profile/head) were clipped to the carrier and moved across between 3-8 mph. We learned/utilized tracking and ambush methods to put rounds on the target. Distance was 50 & 100yrds.

Very good training and a great learning experience.

I've shot cable movers before and they can be quite a challenge, but unless the operator is varying the movement, they are fairly easy to trap. The most challenging scenairos are pop-ups. This can be done with an automated system, but can also be done from a pit, where the target guys change positions before the targets come up - so you have to find your target then engage it in the allotted time. You can also add stress by either varying the time the targets are up or by gradually increasing the time.
