Okay, here is the deal. I have a Handi-rifle in .223 that I would like to order another barrel for. For those that are interested in the info, here is the site:

http://www.hr1871.com/barrelAcc/index.htm

Now, for the fun of it, I have listed my options in the poll and will order WHATEVER caliber wins!

The purpose is to use for fun and for short range deer hunting (open sites).

Have fun voting! (I'll have the fun shooting!)

I'm strongly in favor of the 45-70 for the short shot deer gun concept. A friend of mine had one and I used to love to shoot that rifle. You could literally shoot through a big bush and nail teh deer on the other side as long as you were inside of 150 yards of your intended victim.

A little biased maybe, but I voted for the 45-70. Awesome potential for fun with handloading, and I think it will be effective.

Ask for a casting pot, some lead, and blackpowder for Christmas :D

Alright, we got some good comments and good votes. I was leaning to .45-70 but I have not (and will not) cast a vote. It will be left to the masses to decide!!

Any of the three would be fun and I'm looking forward to it!

where 44 mag really shines is small leverguns
yes the .45-70 Govt is a heavy cartridge and a .44 Mag being an acceptable pistol round as far as recoil goes would be an outstanding round for a lightweight lever action carbine/short rifle
id like to see a .500 S&W lever gun
440 gr @ 1625 fps with an 11 3/8" pistol barrel now imagine what they would do with a rifle barrel 18-22"

I voted .44 mag. No doubt the the 45-70 is alot more gun but I think the 44 is plenty for "close range" deer. Of course, Mel, you might consider 200 yards close i dunno. For sub100yard deer and just having a good ole time, the .44 just seems alot more down to earth. But then agian, who said down to earth was fun?
