I was watching a show on discovery times channel about US Army Sniper School and i saw the night scope on their rifles, had 3 bottons across the top and windage and elevation knobs on the side, i was interested in who makes the scope as i have never seen a scope like that before. they were also firing in the day with the same scope that kind of struck me as odd. i would be interested in the manufacterer and how much one would run. i would imagine they are pretty spendy.

Yeah, especially those Gen III scopes. I'm sure those are cost so much money. Aren't they effective out to 300 yards?

Those are 8x scopes that they use...i forget the name AN/PVS 14 i think... Mel Correct me if I am wrong. The max range of the scopes are above 300 meters... its because of night conditions, it is nearly impossible to determine wind speed. 300 meters is as safe as you should be able to fire without making wind adjustments.

You can get around that problem however. It's not going to give you any real data out at the target, but you can get a good estimate by using a windspeed meter at your location.

A decent one is Silva's Alba Windwatch. It measures windspeed, air pressure, altitude, temperature, chill effect. It can also measure windspeed average under a period of time up to a maximum of the last 40 seconds.

Well, I'm not totally sure which scope is being referred to. I've used AN/PVS 10s and 12's and have seen the 14's. I've also used a thermal, but its pretty easy to ID.

The one good thing about night shooting is that weather conditions are "usually" calmer at night with less moving air as the air cools and gets thicker. BUT, there are always storms and various areas of the world that are just ALWAYS windy. A wind meter is a good idea.

Reasonably priced? Night Scopes for my AKM and PSL

I have a Hungarian preban AKMS 7.62 x 39 and a Romanian PSL 7.62 x 54R that both have side rails and have been looking into a night scope but don't want to break the bank. I found a few from Binocularsmart.com. They are 1+gen american made Russian style night scopes for around $350- $450. Details below. I am thinking of trying one out. Anyone know anything about "Falcon" scopes? It reads well and sounds interesting. 2.5x mag with laser designator that is internal only. Hopefully someone out there has some first hand experience before I send out $400 OBAMA years dollars.

COLLIMATING NIGHT VISION SCOPE FALCON NCS-02 2.7x57 is a perfect hunting tool due to the special laser "Red Dot" reticle (a reflection of the beam on the retina) which gives You an extra point when shooting at a moving target. Lets look, how usual aiming works:

You are aligning 3 points (red dots at the picture) to take aim and shoot. When you are aiming with the FALCON night vision laser dot scope, you only need to align two of this points, as shown at this picture:

That's why you dont need to aim carefully to shoot, just point that laser "Red Dot" reticle to the target and shoot. Especially when target is in motion.

* The laser beam does not leave the scope and is not visible outside the scope, it is NOT a cheap "LASER-POINTER"
