After thousands of rounds of flawless operation my RPK clone ran into a little snag. During cleaning, the piece the manual calls the 'front spring guide' broke and sent the front spring reatiner flying, luckily I found it.
The spring guide is like safety wire that holds the retainer and shortens the spring for easier assembly.
Has anyone else had this happen? If there are any AK-47 guys out there, your advice would be appreciated.

I'm not a Kalashnikov guy, but if it means anything I would ask my smith, and if he said it was a good idea I'd buy a complete new unit for it, can't set you back all that much.

Mostly I shoot Russian surplus, 123 gr ball. Its a copper coated steel hollow point with a lead core. Berdan primer. They pack a good punch, and shoot about 2-3 moa.
Ive tried the Wolf ammo, and the accuracy definately fell off. So now that my range has banned steel ammo, I put the russian ammo in the wolf box with a couple of wolf rounds on top.

It doesn't rain much where I live, the steel ammo tends to smolder in the brush and start fires
They don't like when you put holes in there steel targets also
If you shoot a .50, you have to shoot 500 yds or more. There are steel targets to 800 yds.

50 AE is not the problem... 50BMG is. Lots of ranges have hanging steel plates... and when people fire a .50BMG at them... it puts holes in the plates. A .50 AE wouldnt do anything to a hanging steel popper plate. Allthough... i have seen steel plates that have been shot so much that they get soft and bendable!!! And if you hit it with a small diameter high velocity round... like a .38 Super or .357 Mag... it will rip right through those old plates.
