I need to find a scope for the rifie I am building. (Info on rifle can be found in detail in 'project rifle' under rifles. Basically it is a Rem. 700 that I am fixing up, ex.- A-5 stock, glass bed & machine work, new optics, etc.

Where I need help is in the optics dept. I want a good quality scope, something solid and reliable, like a leupold. The problem there is I would like to keep the cost down. Obviously you get what you pay for, however is there something close to a leupold that is not quite as expensive?

Also, I'm not sure what magnification I want, I would like to learn how to use mil dots and fixed power scopes, but the good ones are sooooo expensive. If I plan on using the at max out to say 600 (1000 if given the chance), what should I be looking for. Biggest magnification possible on my budget, or fixed pwr. The most (and I mean most!) I would like to pay for this scope is $800, if I can get it for less that $700 I would be much happier.

So far this is what I am looking at:

1. Burris Black Diamond 8-32X 50mm (30mm Tube) Matte (SF) Ballistic Mil-Dot (Target)
-found it for $709

2. Burris Black Diamond "Side Focus" 6-24X 50mm (30mm Tube) Matte (SF) Fine Plex (Target)
-$669

3. Leupold Mark IV M1 8.5-25X 50mm Matte (30mm Tube) Mil Dot -$1119 :(

4. Leupold FX-III 12X 40mm Matte Target (AO) (Leupold Dot)
-$569

5. Leupold Mark IV PR 4.5-14X 40mm Matte (30mm Tube) Mil-Dot
-$789

6. Leupold Mark IV M3 3.5-10X 40mm Matte (30mm Tube) Mil-Dot
-$889

7. Leupold Vari-XIII 3.5-10X 40mm Matte Dplx (Tactical w/ Target Knobs)
-$399 <<<< THIS ONE SEEMS REALLY GOOD, IT's ON SALE

8. Leupold VX-III 8.5-25X 50mm Target (30mm Tube) SF Matte (Wide Dplx)
-$849

9. Ne others u can think of???

Burris signature select scope 6-24 x 44 mm with mil dots. $545.99 from midway. This is a good scope. Yes there may be better scopes out there but bang for buck this is a good scope. I have the target version of this scope I bought a few years ago. Burris gives lifetime warraty. The extra $200 you spend on another more expensive scope can go to ammo to improve your skills.

If i were you i would buy the 400 dollor VX-III 3.5-10X40mm Tactical Duplex with Target Knobs untill i could afford the Third option you posted... the Leupold Mark IV M1 8.5-25X50mm Matte (30mm Tube) Mil Dot at $1119. When your about 400 bucks away from affording the 8.5-25X leupold you can sell the 3.5-10 leupold...

Okay, here are my prices for the same scopes:

-found it for $709

Sorry, I can't touch that price:

2. Burris Black Diamond "Side Focus" 6-24X 50mm (30mm Tube) Matte (SF) Fine Plex (Target)
-$669

SC Price - $641

3. Leupold Mark IV M1 8.5-25X 50mm Matte (30mm Tube) Mil Dot -$1119 :(

SC Price - $1000

4. Leupold FX-III 12X 40mm Matte Target (AO) (Leupold Dot)
-$569

SC Price - $485

5. Leupold Mark IV PR 4.5-14X 40mm Matte (30mm Tube) Mil-Dot
-$789

SC Price - $682 BTW - This is a SC best buy scope, I really like this scope.

6. Leupold Mark IV M3 3.5-10X 40mm Matte (30mm Tube) Mil-Dot
-$889

SC Price - $804

7. Leupold Vari-XIII 3.5-10X 40mm Matte Dplx (Tactical w/ Target Knobs)
-$399 <<<< THIS ONE SEEMS REALLY GOOD, IT's ON SALE

This is an older discontinued model (at least the tactical model). which is probably why they are cheap. Good scopes though

8. Leupold VX-III 8.5-25X 50mm Target (30mm Tube) SF Matte (Wide Dplx)
-$849

SC Price - $768

I think that about does it

I would try one, but I cannot get them yet from any of my suppliers. One of them has a date of 4/13/05 as when they think they will get them in. I do have pricing on them though if anyone is interested
