this might sound like a really stupid question so here it goes...
when a barrel lenght is given is the measurment only the rifled part of the tube or chamber and all?

all of it. The throat and rifled portion of a 24 inch .308 barrel will be slightly over 22 inches.

......I've wondered that also......I would guess it's the "rifled" length because the twist rate is relative to the rifleing not the chamber.......and err..well....the barrel is the barrel and the chamber is the chamber
