Heres a question. I'm a Police Officer shopping for a tactyical rifle. I can buy a Rem 700 VLS in .308 locally for about $570.00. I can get a 700pss for about $680.00 + S/H from KY Imports. My understanding is that, with the exception of the stocks and barrel length, they are pretty much the same rifle. Is this a correct assumtion? Does the synthetic stock on the PSS warrant the extra cash? Would I be better off buying a VLS and restocking it on my own?

If you have the access to a synthetic stock that is actually better than the PSS, I would say go for it.

A good synthetic will set you back a few hundred bucks though.
Unless you already have a tactical stock waiting for a 700 action, you won't be keeping the price below $680.

Yes, you are correct, that is the only difference between the rifles, they do no extra work.

Now, to buy the same stock you get on the 700P would cost you $300+ from HS, so no money is to be saved there, BUT, if you wanted a different HS stock than what is on the 700P, then buy the VLS and get the stock you want.
