Over the weekend, I spend some time testing my new rifle and several different brands of ammo. Feed issues aside (other thread) here is what I found.

CCI Standard velocity and CCI Mini-mags were OK, but nothing spectacular. I only tried them because I had them hanging around.

Wolf Match and Match Extra both shot quite well. Or I thought so until I tried Eley.

This rifle loves the Eley Match and Tennex! Even shooting with a scope that was too far back, I was getting ragged one shot holes at 75yds. Problem is, my wallet does not like them. The Eley Match is twice the price of the Wolf Match and three times the price of the Wolf Extra.

Any suggestions on what to try next?

No suggestions unfortunately, but I would like to try those Eley! I'm not sure if we can even get them here in Oz. How would they compare in velocity to Win. T22 (which is popular for target rifle and pistol here)?

Probably irrelevant to your Savage, but out of my 92FS pistol .22 conversion, I got the following results at 25m (off a sandbagged rest, five shots per group):

Winchester Super Speed: 7/8 inch with one 1.5 inch flyer and - second group - same again with a 1.75 inch flyer(?)

Winchester T22: best group 1.5 inches.

CCI: best group 1.4 inches

Winchester XTR: best group 1.25 inches

With S&W revolver (6inch barrel) average grouping was 1.25 inches with T22

I must try this experiment again with the Brno. Back in the day, I recall my Dad and I trying T.22 in the CZ452 at 50m. As I recall (and it was a long time ago) they shot the proverbial ragged hole with no flyers.

I have a box of Federal HV Match (40grns) waiting to experiment with but no data as yet. Sorry the above is mainly pistol data; without a Ransome rest, it is hardly definitive. However, T22 seems like a good all rounder. The problem, of course, is what works well in one firearm may be disappointing in another. Sure would like to try that Eley though. In the old days, Eley was the aristrocrat of shotgun cartridges in the UK - didn't even know they made .22LR!

Cheers

Try to justify spending the dollars on the ammo that it likes...you won't be happy until you do so.

Try the Eley Club, Team, etc. round-nose options and even the purple-box Eley sport...you will likely have more fliers the cheaper you go, but that's the opportunity cost.

In Australia Eley is available through Rebel Gun Works in Brisbane (and probably others as well) but it is VERY expensive here.

Just to add a little to this Nate, for training you should be treating each shot as you would with your centerfire anyway, that makes it somewhat easier to justify the cost of top shelf ammo. What is the point if you can't tell if a flyer is you or the ammo? You may as well just dry fire with your centerfire, it is free.

Thanks Blue. I might try 'others as well' for an experimental packet of Eley.

Those are on my list to look at, along with a couple Lapua offerings.

Some more for the list, maybe.
Saw that. Most of the stuff at or near the top of the list starts at $10 a box (50) and goes up - fast. That is assuming you can even find it.

You might try some of the Federal match and see how it does.

I've seen that mentioned but I have to sort through because that description fits more than one round. But I'm pretty sure that what you are referring to is:
Federal Premium Gold Medal Match 40gr #922A (1080 fps)($9.99)

The others might be:
Federal Champion Target 40gr High Velocity (1240 fps)($1.79)
Federal AutoMatch Target 40gr (1200 fps)($2.46*)
Federal Champion Target 36gr Plated Hollow Point (1260 fps)($2.10*)
Federal Premium Gold Medal 40gr High Velocity (1200 fps)($3.79)
Federal Premium Gold Medal 40gr Ultra Match (1080 fps)($3.49)
*Price per 50 estimated from bulk pack price

Yea the first one you listed. Ive used some of it a couple weeks ago and very impressed with the performance. An the Gold Medal Ultra Match you have listed is very good also. Ive shot it a few times as well and for the money, very good results.

Decent groups, but take a look at the targets above. Notice how your groups on the left are medium, the ones in the middle are pert near small, and the ones on the right are Eff'n huge?

Think about that correlation, and see if you can't find some causation...then fix whatever that is, when you find it. :) (hint: make sure the rifle is naturally pointed at each individual target before firing for group..don't force it there from the middle)

From what position are you testing?

Also, to shoot smaller groups, find somethings smaller to AIM the crosshair at; I've shot some of my best groups aiming at a prior bullet hole in the backer.
