Mel,

How do you think these guys would feel about a scout rifle? I have both the Steyr and the Savage scout rifles and they are perhaps the most useful long guns I have. I would suggest the Savage as a starting point. Complete with Burris Scout Scope, mine costs me less than $750 out the door and it will shoot right along with my Steyr which cost three times as much! Both are EXCELLENT weapons, are capable of MOA accuracy and have tactical and practical applications. You have GOT to handle one of these rifles to believe how well they perform.

You don't know how bad I wanted a savage scout.... unfortunately they do not make them any longer. I am actually in the process of building a scout rifle based on a turkish mauser action with a swedish mauser carbine barrel. This rifle will be my primary big game hunting rifle if it performs well.

I do have a review on the site of the steyr tactical elite (Scout)

I've had a chance to play with a Steyr Scout, and it's nice, even though I don't have a use for it. I don't hunt, and from a military point of view, if I'd need to replace my current rifle with something lighter, I'd switch over to an AK4 or AK5 with a scope, it would be more useful tactically.

I thought Savage still cataloged the Scout. As a matter of fact, I think they now offer it in stainless with the AccuTrigger. I'll have to check it out. If I find a source, I'll let you know. It's a phenomenal rifle. If they really have discontinued it I'll have to start scouting (no pun intended) around for another one before the supply dries up. Make sure and post a picture of your scout rifle when you complete it. I have considered building one in 350 Remington for larger game in tight brush. I'd like to see what stock you use. I was going to use a Clifton stock, but they went out of business.

yeah, check again. I just did, and not luck. I probably would not have started this project if the savage scout was still available. None of my local shops have any left.

My initial plan is a hogue molded over.

Yeah, I checked too. Bummer! I have seen them on www.gunsamerica.com for about $350-500. I checked earlier today (after I found out they aren't offered anymore), but only found them in 7mm-08. Not a bad chambering, but it's not a .308. I hate to see a good product bite the dust! Damn!

If you want a Styre Scout in .308, my A-Gunner has one and is quietly trying to move it (meaning not yet listed on GunsAmerica.com; I guarantee that any reasonable offer will be accepted (I think it has 125 rounds through it - 50 from me).

Hey guys, old on the site and and new on the forums, they're great! I know this post has been idle for a while but I found a link with the Scout that K2 was talking about. Turns out you could still get em, but only from the custom shop. I dont know how much it'll help, but if I can make a little dream come true then I'm happy!
