When students go to sniper school and are tested on accuracy and marksmanship, does a hit qualify as a hit to a general area(head, chest, etc.) or a precisely sized target (a sized circle)?

Well... obviously if they want to pass sniper school they are going to have to be a good shot. You have to qualify Expert out to the 500 yard line with an Iron sighted M-16A2 just to be qualified to be nominated to be possibly thought about to go into the sniper school in the Marine Corps. But... the larger problem is just getting into sniper school in the first place. Also... Sniper school is much more complicated than just shooting.

Getting past the acceptance to sniper school, and once you are in:

For qualification (in the US Army sniper school when I went through, which was similar to the USMC qual) you have to qualify in 3 marksmanship portions

Unknown Distance (UD): 300-1000 meters
Moving Targets: 300-700 yards
Cold Bore Shot: 600-800 meters

In all cases, a hit anywhere on the target is considered a hit. UD and Cold bore are shot at staionary iron maidens. (Siluette targets, 40" tall, 20" wide). The moving targets are shot at profile silluettes, 40" tall, 10" wide to simulate the side profile of a man.
