I was reading an article online from the December 1996 gun-tests.com (reloading for match m14) and they were discussing a duplicate round for the LCM M852. They said that the load consisted of LC brass, a 168 grain sierra matchking bullet, and a powder charge of around 41.5 grains of IMR 4895. Bullet was seated to 2.800 OAL inches. Primer was a WW.

My question, is, Is this the duplicate M852 load? I thought that the IMR4064 powder was the powder for the load, or is it for the current 168 grain cartridge.

Has anyone loaded the IMR4895 for the bullet and what were the results?

thanks

IMR 4895 was originally developed for the military so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the powder in the M852. I know H4064 was suppose to be the powder in the old Federal gold match, but I never heard it was the powder in the M852.

IMR 4895
Originally a military powder featured in the 30-06, IMR 4895 is extremely versatile. From 17 Remington to the 243 Winchester to the 375 H&H Magnum, accuracy and performance are excellent. In addition, it is a long time favorite of Match shooters.
I don't know what the duplication load is for the M852, but I do use IMR4895 and have had very good luck with it. I had a called Glen Zediker and asked him a few questions. When I ask him what a good load would be for my LR308, he told me to try 41.5 grains of IMR4895, a 168 grain bullet, Winchester brass and a CCI BR2 primer. It's a very versatile powder. I have used it in my 223, 22-250, 308, ,30-30, 30-06 and my friends 270.

Glen has a lot of experience in High Power Shooting and has authored some very informative books on reloading and making AR's shoot. I have bought 3 of his books personally.

Not a fan of the SMK 168 due to it's boat tail geometry. 175SMK has gotten out to 1000 easily in my 700P.
The 168MK was designed for 300yard match shooting.
the introduction of the 175MK in the M118 LR was designed to increase the range. Another good bullet that’s a tad better than the Sierra is the Berger 175gr OTM tactical bullet at the extended ranges in the 308 Win.

IMR 4895 was the powder in the M852
Depending on powder lot number in the year average was 42.0 with the 168 Sierra MK which was the new match bullet of the time period replacing the 173gr.
IMR 4895 remained the powder of choice until the mid 90’s. Then the Varget and Reloader 15 and N140 entered the scene. Federal choose IMR 4064 for their Gold Medal Match Loads and later for M118 LR after ATK received the contract. All the powders mentioned above are excellent in the 308 Win. Love the 308 Win a 45 year relationship reloading the 308 Win.

I got a good deal on Federal GMM 168SMK's. I was having issues after about 800yds. I attended a Applied Ballistics seminar in the Carolinas put on by Bryan Litz well before covid. I asked Bryan about the 168SMKs past 800yds issue and he said that the boattail geometry was off. I didn't push for more discussion, but when I went with the 175SMK, I was good with my 700P out to 1000. I did not try any further as that was the max distance of the range I had access to. If you could afford to go to one of these seminars, it was will worth it but it costs about $1500-2000, All inclusive except for transportation if I recall correctly.
