Yes, for the most part, they are the same. The one thing I am noticing though, is that the fixed power spotting scopes have fallen out of favor (much like rifle scopes, but possibly more so) and I think there are some real sweet deals on fixed power spotting scopes. The versitility of the variable powers is very nice, but a fixed, especially compact, could be extremely useful.
