Stock weld vs. Spot weld

I was reading Adrian Gilbert's book Sniper the other day and I was very confused when he talked about the spot weld and how it differed from the stock weld. Somebody PLEASE clear me up on this :( .

How was he using the term "spot weld" ?

MEL
Where possible, the thumb of the right hand extends over the small of the stock to permit the sniper to obtain a spot weld--the point of contact between the sniper's cheek and thumb on the small of the stock.
:?
Maby it means as your right hand is on the weld, your right thumb is on TOP of the weld at the same time. Lean your cheek against that. Maby
