Suggestion on a superb .308?

Hi all,

This will be my first posting and with my first posting I am requsting some help. I am looking for a superb .308 for target shooting, but also to take with my for hunting. When hunting I will use the harryp bipod and never stand...so the extra kilo(s) do not bother me. However, my budget is USD 2000 for rifle only! I would love to get the Sako TRG-22, but unfortunately that rifle is way over my budget! I have been looking some on the Tikka T3 tactical which is a new rifle, but I do not know anyone with who has used it so....Please let me know what you would recommend, please also be aware that some US specific rifles can not be found in Sweden, or for the right money when it would cost to much to import.
Thank you very much for your help, I look forward to hear from you all in this regard

Cheers/ Olsson

Hum, that is funny, because the rem 700 is used in all conditions without problem over here in North America. I'm not sure how much more harsh the winters are there, but its not a problem here in Montana. I suspect most all "mass produced" actions might have problems with ice/cold in very extreme conditions (I remember the L96 had this problem when Sweden was developing the PSG-90 which led to some changes that became the L96A1).

I would assume there will be many nice cheep weapons to find in Sweden if you guys would fancy to import!
Hum, I like the sound of that!!

MEL
Just spoke briefly with the gunsmith again, and he told me that he has never heard anything problem with the action from the Rem 700? Please tell me more....

He also works with the american barrel company Lilja ....I will see when he sends me the quote what the cost is and wheather there could be any improvements made....which I will discuss with my friends, and ofcourse you guys :)

Cheers/ Olsson

Lilja...never heard off...I could see that Mel did not have that company as one of the suggestions for barrel on his project..... :?
I will say right now, Lilja is one of the best barrel makers out there! Clearly considered one of the best by many people, myself included. I did not consider them primarily because they are more money..... but by all means, they are excellent barrels!

MEL
One reason why Norway decided to base the NM149 on the M98 action was the fact that neither of the other choices were dependable enough in northern Norway during mid-winter. And I understood the reason why when I spent 19 months at the border to Russia....

The other two main reasons were that the AI AW was too expensive and the NM149 was built by Våpensmia - a company some of the people in charge of the project had certain interests in :? But the bottom line was that neither Rem700 or Win70 (I think it was...) were dependable enough for military applications.

So when I said "hunting" - I should've said "trotting around in the snow for weeks at the time"...for "normal" hunting I would assume it would be more than good enough. And IF it should fail to fire - at least it's only a prey getting away...your life will most likely go on to try again some other day.

Lovely - thanks Mel. It sounds like Lilja is the way to go, and especially when he is considerd one of the best.
Just a comment the other gun smith I was speaking with said that it is a pain in the xxx since the 9\11 to have parts delivered from the US. He was working with a company in Scottland that was called Barrel-border.com. Ever heard anything about them, it seems they have a great record\ history....? Thanks Mel, Have a good weekend and talk to you soon.

Kind regards\ Olsson

More or less, up in the morning before the sunrise have breakfast and put on the #white clothes#. Put on the skiis and go for long wintermorning skiitour, see the woods wake up at the sound of my cross county skiis (White Flash) is gliding over the snow.....and then back in the afternoon, or depending on your luck :D

So, extreme weather in the winter yes...but I can not see that last longer then one day. It is not when I was in the military we stayed out for weeks. I was by finish\ russian border in the winter myself for a month...sleeping in tent and all that. One night we had -46 celcius....that is soooo cold

Take care Kamatz and talk to you soon/ Olsson
My gunsmith started by ordering Lilja..which didn't work out very well due to the restrictions on "military" equipment (the main reason why I want to give George Jr a black eye  ). He then tried Hart..which supposedly shipped off a huge load of blanks. If they did, they're still in the US customs office somewhere. Krieger didn't work out much better. In the end he went to Border..which finally managed to deliver 5R barrel blanks.

I think you'll be happy no matter what barrel you have. Lilja, Border, Lothar Walter, Krieger or Shilen...I think they're more than good enough for us non-benchrest people.
If i had to throw my hat into the ring here on a barrel reccomendation, i have a ruger 10/22 that i built forever and a day ago using a volquartsen reciever and internals and a shilen barrel. Needless to say at 25 yards ive shot 5 shot groups in the .12-.15 range using a return to battery style benchrest and DMS subsonics.

For those of you who know how shitty 22 ammo is on flyers and the effective range on a 22 caliber might understand this a little better.

Knowing that there is a difference between rimfire and centerfire, shilen barrels look nearly mirror finished on the inside of the bore. The crown and chamber itself is generally very well cut and of benchrest quality.
Yeah..but Olsson lives in Sweden and getting a rifle out of the US these days is hell. A friend of mine is waiting for a HD rifle - and the process hasn't exactly been smooth..nor cheap.
