Just curious as to what you pros who do this for a living use for targets. Any ideas or comments welcome.

Totally dependent upon the type of training is in line for that day. For my unknown distance long range shooting, we use a 20"x20" steel gong. Our current range allows us to engage it anywhere from about 400 meters to 800 meters.

For zero and known distance shooting, I tend to use orange dots from 1 - 3" on cardboard. For known distance out to 1000 I use the 1000 meter competition targets.

I do have various other targets also, some of faces showing brain stem, others that may just be dots or squares. Of course, for a change of pace, we like to bring out ballons to move in the wind, or eggs, etc. Some of my favorite (but don't get to do very often) is to tie up flash bangs at 500 meters. Yep, they actually go off when hit... its great fun.

tie 2 balloons to a remote control vehicle and have someoen drive the thing while you try to shoot one baloon without hitting the other... good hostage rescue practice
red dots 1" i think are the best to practice group size
i usually just use 100y precision rifle zero targets.. have a small red dot on it heh works well for practiceing your group size

thx for the info guys, the flashbang thing sounds awsome but I doubt I could get my hands on any. They aren't readily available to the public are they? The ballons moving in the wind and stuff sounds like good practice. Thx for everything.

Thanks FLEA, I didn't think they were available to civilians. Exploading targets work well too. I have used them before and I liked them. But be careful. I shot at one on a windy day at 100 yds. with my AR, I knew I might be off some but I wanted to see just how much a good wind could move my little .223 bullets. On my first shot on an exploader I didn't quite hit it dead center, my shot was at about 3 o'clock and right on the edge of the circle. Instead of exploading it started shooting out a small flame like a flare. I thought this was kinda cool and turned to see if my friend had seen what happened. By the time I turned back, half of the board was engulfed in flames!!!.....................Needless to say exploading targets are no longer allowed at our local range :p . oops!

APK-223, Man, thats helarious, though I'm sure the range folk did not appreciate that!

FLEA, yes man, take a flash bang and set it out there, its pretty dang fun. We all know the amount of BANG there is in a flashbang... Of course, if its a public range, you better get permission first.

mele: Yea I kinda felt bad that me and Dan single handedly got exploading targets banned from our range. :( But I did my best to put the fire out! And I did end up saving like half the board. I don't have access to flashbangs yet, im still a civilian :p . But I begin my NROTC next month when the fall semester starts. :D

Does anyone know if propane bottles exploade?? May be a stupid question, but I wasn't sure if the bullet piercing the bottle, would give a sufficient spark or generate enough heat to detonate the bottle. Any coments welcome. (Obviously I do not plan to do this at my range)

I saw a video of someone shooting one with a 50bmg....it made a big fireball but didnt do what I would call explode.....they used a A.P.I.T. round though so I don't know if a normal round would of got the same effect. Typically I would assume....if you tank is anchored first round would release gas ...second round hitting the tank might ignite the fumes.......all speculation though. Be safe out there.....in fact try on a rainy day just to be safe.

FLEA: That is exactly what I was thinking. Thanks for the info. And I always do everything I can to keep myself and those around me safe. :D
