This is probably pretty basic for everyone else here, but I'm a fairly recent bolt shooter. Anyway, I took my 700VS out yesterday and used up the last of my cheap ammo for it. As I was cleaning it, a very basic thing occured to me: cleaning the chamber. I'm used to shooting AR's and I know those need cleaning and why, but how important is it to clean the chamber on a bolt? Does the case expand enough to keep it clean? I usually clean it, but I've skipped it a couple times. Long story short, I probably won't know if it's affecting my accuracy because I'm not exactly a sharpshooter, but I can got some 1/2 in groups with the rifle and match ammo. Thanks.

Is cleaning the chamber as important as your gas gun? Probably not, however, I would still clean it on a somewhat regular basis. Depending on who you talk to you will get different opinions on it but I would clean it pretty frequently. I don't know that if you skip it once or twice that it will make that much of a difference. I had a stock PSS that I would only twirl a Hoppes patch in the chamber once in a while and it shot a 3/8 group before I sold it.
Your mileage may vary but I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

I dunno how important it is to clean the chamber, because I've never not cleaned mine...and I always find some gunk in it when I do. In theory the shell should expand enough to fill the chamber airtight, but I bet you could insert a fired casing into your chamber anyway. Getting it out might be hard, but it will fit, probably. Ergo, some space.

I pass a large q tip with oil in it all around the chamber, then dry by stuffing a thin rag in it and twisting it around. Probably not the best method.

I didn't think it would matter too much, but I'm actually going for some accuracy with this one so I thought I'd ask about it. I figured I'd clean it for corrosion prevention if for nothing else. Maybe I'll head over to the gallery, I'm fairly proud of this one... Thanks.
