If you can find a scope that gathers more light and is more durable than the US Optic SN-3 - BUY IT.

I love mine and think it was worth every penny of the extra $$.

I'm assuming you are comparing the high end LR Mk4's to the US Optics, that is really the only fair comparison. I think they are both excellent, they both are extremely rugged and they both have excellent optics. The US Optics scopes are just a bit bulky for my taste, so I tend to head to leupold more. Nothing against US Optics, just my preference. I don't think there is a clear winner, just good options

I think that Mel is correct by asking you to ask yourself what you want and need.

Ask yourself what you like and dislike of scopes. What you want or need and finally how much you are willing to spend or want to spend and the answer should almost leap at you.

Here is a picture of a high tech USO SN-3 3.8-22x58 with a 35mm tube. 11 position diode lit MOA Scale reticle and EREK knob (45 moa in one turn). Also heavy duty USO rings for 35mm and USO M700 short action base.

All this on a M700 M40A3 in .308. Note thread protector on end of barrel.

I just don't think you can buy anything like this from anybody else!

Yep, critter is correct, no one else offers such customization of scopes like US Optics, and for that, they lead the industry! If you can live with the size and weight, they are excellent scopes.

The SN-3 scope shown above is about the largest conventional scope offered by USO currently.

Interestingly, the M40A3 weighs in at 17#, the same weight as the rifle with Badger Rings and bases and the USO M40 10x Sniper Scope! :)

I like Leupold but thats like comparing a Mustang to a Ferrari..... I have never seen a scope with the clarity and ability to completely customize a scope to your needs as what US Optics can do. Of course they don't come cheap....but like they always say....you get what you pay for.

There is no way you can compare a Leupold, even the MKIV, to a USO scope. USO is just that much better. You have to ask yourself can you shoot to the scopes potential?

USO base configuration, not as bad as you would think!

Today the best deal from USO is as follows:

SN-3 Mark 1 3.2-17x44 with 30mm tube and ERGO objective

This scope specifically excludes the following:

Special Reticle
Lit reticle feature
EREK Knob System
Sun Shade Tube with ARD
T-Pal Side Parallax adjustment
Large tube (35 or 40mm)
Larger Objective (44/58, 58 or 80mm)
Special Color or Coating to outside of scope.
Lens covers
knob Covers
Special knobs
Rings
Bases

However, this scope is about $1850.00

1.8 - 10x44mm (without “Ergo” Adj. objective) $1695.00
3.2 - 17x58 or 44mm (with “Ergo” Adj. objective) $1850.00
3.8 - 22x58mm (with “Ergo” Adj. objective) $2200.00

This is the "entry level" SN-3 and a very good scope. I would add the M-40 look-alike knobs and what ever else you can't live without. But watchit the options add up fairly rapidly. :)

just wondering how do you think Night Force compares to Leupold and US Optics
its a gargantuan scope thats high priced, worth it?
honestly woudlnt mind having either a Leupold Mk4, USO or Night Force
if i had to say (my opinion only of course) it would be in this order: US Optics, NightForce, Leupold Mk4

Leupold gets the job done, for less.

But if you have the money (or your department does), always opt for something better. I got to shoot my buddies rifle with a very nice U.S. Optics scope (an older one) and it was flawless.

Jeff:

Having looked at Nightforce several years ago, my determination is that they make a really great scope.

However, I had the opportunity to work closely with the late John Williams Sr. at US Optics to push the envelope on several ideas I had for custom scopes including optional tube sizes, power ranges, reticles, etc. I have to tell you that challenging him to produce some very interesting equipment was a lot of fun, and I must say that he had a fine mind and probably had as much fun as I did with this stuff.

Night Force, in my opinion builds a fine optical device without the option to customize as much as USO does. You pay a little more for USO (maybe even a lot more, if you like special stuff.)

You can play around with NF models and make some choices, etc. They and S&B, like USO push the technology and build some interesting products.

The problem I have with USO scopes is what I mentioned in another thread when talking about the Hensoldt scope on the Swedish PSG90: Too much stuff. You almost expect Clippy to pop up and present you a wizard. Feels too much like a scope purely aimed at target range shooting.

And as for S&B being one of the leaders? Zeiss is far ahead, especially after they bought Hensoldt. Crisp optics that work just as well in -50 degrees Celsius of Lappland during the deepest, darkest winter as in the +50 degrees Celsius in the shadows down in Sierra Leone in the middle of the summer.

The drawback is that the Hensoldt line is hard to find, and those scopes cost a _lot_.

When Sweden bought the 800 PSG90's, the unit price for the complete package was SEK50000(Around $6600 in todays dollar value), the scope accounted for almost 40% of the cost. And that was back in 1988, when the order was signed.

Mel,

When I was shopping for a scope to put on my RUM I compared Ziess Conquest, Swarovski, Leupold, NightForce, Nikon and a few others. I ruled Nikon real fast. Just didnt like them. I set my criteria up as something i nthe 4-24 power and a 50 millimeter objective. Mil-dot reticle. Then I wanted to stay under $1500 for the scope. It came down to Leupold 6.5-24 x 50, the NF NSX 5.5-22 x 56 and about the same thing in Zeiss. The others priced themselves out of my range. I really liked the Leupold and started leaning that direstion until I looked at the NF and Ziess. I did some direct side by side comparisons of the NF and Z and found that when I focused on the target about 100 yards away the reticle in the Z just all but disappeared it got so blurry. I looked at the NF at the same target and the it was just as clear and the reticle was clear and sharp. These are just my observations from when I was shopping and look forward to hearing your review of the Z.
